    Larkin about
    Larkins-Traditional 3.4%abv:A toffeeish autumnal classic.
Larkins-Porter 5.2% abv-Hints of greatness, but sour notes predominating.Taken off during the session. Disappointing, as it was the first time I'd tried this eagerly awaited beer for a long time.
    Larkins Traditional, my BOTW.

Not much variety but decent quantity.

    Goddards -- Scrum Diggety
    York -- Guzzler
    Crouch Vale -- Brewers Gold * >>3PT

BOTW goes to Crouch Vale Brewers Gold in very fine form on a long session in The Pride of Spitalfields .Easy to forget what a great session pint this is.

Next week only limited opportunites for beer, the lull before the pre Christmas storm.

    Another short list this week,
    Darkstar Hophead
    Darkstar American Pale Ale
    Longdog Lamplight Porter
    Brewdog Punk IPA (bottle)
    Courage Directors

BOTW goes to a rare example of a good Hampshire brewed beer, Longdog Lamplight Porter

A decent week for me based on a crawl of Baildon, Saltaire and Shipley. Some great beers and three new pubs to boot.

    Dr Mortons - Cheese Restrainer.
    Bridestones - Smoked Porter.*
    Bingley - Thirst Brew.
    Saltaire - Winter Ale.
    Fullers - ESB.
    Oakham JHB.*
    Saltaire - Celebration Ale.*
    Saltaire - Pride.
    Riverhead - Liquorice Stout.*
    Saltaire - Amarillo Gold.*
Red Squirrel - Redwood American IPA.*
    Ossett - Treacle Stout.
Beavertown - Bone King Double IPA.*

Only a cigarette paper between the Amarillo and the Redwood, but the latter was on superb from at The Hop, Saltaire.

Not a bad week with another visit to the Black Country :-

    Holden's Black Country Bitter 3.8%*
    Twickenham Grandstand 3.8%*
    Red Squirrel Milk Stout 4.0%*
    Banks & Taylor Turkey’s Trauma 4.3%
    Moorhouse's Ice Witch 4.3%
    Rebel Penryn Pale 4.3%
Red Squirrel Black Squirrel Lager (Keg) 4.5%
Wild Card King Of Hearts Pale 4.5%*
East London Brewing Company Nightwatchman 4.5%*
    Elephant School Peasant's Revolt 4.6%*
    Rudgate Rudolph's Ruin 4.6%
    Adnam's Wild Hop 4.8%*
    Exmood Xmas 5.0%
    Red Squirrel A Winter's Tail 5.0%
    Titanic Festive Thirty Five 5.0%*
    Twickenham Decade 5.0%
    Holden's Special 5.1%
    Itchen Valley Russian Winter 5.3%
    Wadworth's Full Sail Wassail 6.0%
    Batham's XXX 6.3%*
    Holden's Old Ale 7.2%*

The winner is a beer I've been trying to get to drink for the best part of forty years, and that's Batham's XXX. I hit the jackpot as all three Batham's pubs visited were selling it at £3.20. I was surprised to find it was not black but slightly darker than their Best. It's on the sweet side but not so much to make it unpleasant to drink. It sailed through the four pints in three different pubs test.

    A very quiet week:
    Everards Old Original*
    Oakham Bishops Farewell*

BOTW Everards Old Original was, at 5.2% rich and malty but with just enough bitterness, a perfect pint for a damp and chilly autumn day.

Quality rather than quantity this week

    Saltaire - Dark Matter
    Baildon - Auburn Flame
    Saltaire - South Island Pale
    Magic Rock - Rapture
    Rat - White Rat
    Ossett - Big Red
    Leeds - Pale

and still a hard choice but the Saltaire - Dark Matter just wins.

A bit of Deja Vu here for me.

I'm going to vote for the same beer for the 2nd time this month.

After trying it in Riverside Inn I voted it BOTW week ending 2nd November.

On the back of that I got Jamie to get some on the bar at The Baum.

    It was marvellous again!!!!

At 6.5% and drinking like a 4% it STILL passed the 3 pint test on a Tuesday night.
