Difficult to understand why JDWs would want to muscle in on the early morning trade of the downmarket ( no insults intended ) cafe. Often clustered around a bus/ train station these low comfort formica topped table and plastic chaired "caffs" are better positioned for the early morning trade. Whats more these places have a name for quick service .Sometimes being staffed by family members customers can be known by name and their catering needs known before the customer opens the door or his mouth to order.
I can appreciate Alesonly comments having been a shift worker all my life. It used to be that there were few shift workers in town centres, the natural place for a JDW, may be things have changed with the UK's industrial base having gone down the pan.

Ironically Both JDW's in my hometown with Bus Stations standing next to it! I often have brekkie and coffee in The Bole Bridge whilst waiting for bus to Birmingham. So 7am opening would be very useful as most cafe opens from 8am in town.

I think it is just a test to see if it is profitable, quite a good idea for their chain I would have thought, If McDonalds can make money out of their effort I think JDW has a chance.

I have noticed JDW almost always to have their pubs next/near bus and train stations.

West Bromwich's JDW stands directly opposite major bus station, Walsall's the Imperial is mere yards from bus station and Brum's Square Peg is on main bus stop route.

As for McDonalds, it stands exactly in the middle between Silk Kite and The Bole Bridge! Interesting fact about our Maccy's.. Tamworth's McDonald's is the world's slowest service and it was confirmed by Maccy's HQ!

OK Hoppy , I will bow to superior knowledge you being a JDW specialist
The ones in Worcester are not really close to bus station (but one is close to the railway ) and Hereford is on the walk into town. But if I wanted quick service it would be a cafe for me. Having time on my hands I would probably go to JDWs and nick a crossword out of the newspapers. Some one else always beats me to it.
Perhaps the only time I have visited Mc Ds is when stopping in a hotel and one was near at hand. The coffee is crap but the bacon rolls used to be cheap and pretty good. I have not tried SubWays, and I found BurgerKing expensive ( but I like their burgers.)
I now have this overwhelming urge for a bacon roll. This will mean a walk into town (Exercise) purchase some bacon and fresh rolls (Expenditure), unsuccessfully attempt to walk past my local pub ( More Expenditure) then walk back home (Exercise ) just in time for me to pig out on the steak and kidney casserole I have on the go in the slow cooker. Well I can always have a bacon roll tomorrow.

No they are not always near rail/bus stations, but when they are it can be very helpful. Breakfast in the 'Spoons gives much better vfm than from the station outlets!

Anyway, I feel sorry for the staff. I know they tend to work on a shift system, but I am sure they are likely to end up clearing up at midnight then opening again for 7 am. Any JDW managers out there?

This is a question that was intriguing me and Dave the other day, we were wondering how JDW's are run and what the managers responsibilities were. It was basically a part of the ongoing tie pub debate where we were trying to work out how the tie effected JDW managers. We came to the conclusion that they were responsible for stock levels and not drink selection, if anyone knows though I would love to hear the answer.

The Spring edition of Wakefield's CAMRA mag popped through my letter box this morning. Inside was this little gem:

'Abashiri Brewery in Japan makes something called Bilk, which is a beer made with 1/3 milk. As it contains milk they have to watch it doesn't boil over in the copper. It has the same colour as normal beers and smells like tea with milk once the fermentation process is finished and the drink is cooled.'

Sounds like a godsend with the new breakfast opening hours. "Good morning. I'll have the Bran Flakes and Bilk meal deal please barman"...... (You can put my consultancy fee in the post Tim. Thanks.)

Left something in JDW in Sheffield once, rang up to enquire if it had been handed in. Asked to speak to manager, and they said which one - they had 14 managers!

They did have the bag and posted it to me by the way.
