Thwaites also won two categories, Nutty Black in Best Mild and Crafty Dan in Best Golden Ale. Really? I've tried Nutty Black and it's a very good mild, but I'd question whether it's the best in the UK, never mind the world. Having not knowingly tasted the Crafty Dan it's difficult to comment, but there are some seriously big hitters in this category. The judging panel looks decent* and a quick glance at the judging protocol seems transparent and fair, which makes me wonder about the number of entries for some categories.
* Although I did cringe inwardly when Tony Barron from Brewdog was on the panel, considering the amount of nominations they received. Probably irrational, I know.
'And where he supped the past lived still. And where he sipped the glass brimmed full' John Barleycorn, Carol Ann Duffy.
This competition is for bottles and cans only so is even more meaningless than the nonsense at the GBBF in August. On cask Nutty Black is a decent mild but I can think of many better ones. I see the brewers have to shell out up to £140.00 per entry to be in it. No wonder I couldn't find a list of the entries.
This of all the awards is probably most meaningless. For years now the criticism has been you have to pay to enter so the big brewers do and then market the beer as an award winner.Had the bronze winning Love not War on keg last week and it was horrible but hey its a World beer Awards winner.
