It's been a week of mostly bland beers, such as Timothy Taylor Boltmaker, Black Sheep Bitter and Marstons EPA, and one exceptionally cold US "craft beer", Portland Stout, which still tasted of nothing at all even after being allowed to warm up a little. So it was a pleasure to detect some flavour in Springhead Leveller and Saltaire Pride, both at The York. In fact the pride was so good I went back for two more.

Beer of the week though was the delectable Red Willow Smokeless 5.7%, a deceptively-named smoked stout, at the Bath Hotel. Packed full of flavour, it made a vivid contrast with the drink I'd had just before, the aforementioned "craft beer".

A great week with many BOTW contenders.

    Purity -- Mad Goose
    Titanic -- Last Porter Call
    Titanic -- White Star*
    Titanic -- Plum Porter *
    Titanic -- Iceberg *
    Blythe -- Ridware Pale
    Dark Star -- Espresso
    Theakston's -- Infallible
    Dark Star -- Hophead *
    Dark Star -- Vice Beer
    Burning Sky -- Aurora *
Saltaire -- Le IPA * (Collaberation with Dark Star )
    Five Points -- Pale Ale
    Burning Sky -- Plateau *
Oakham -- Green Devil IPA *

Very difficult choice but BOTW goes to Titanic Plum Porter in top condition in The Royal Exchange ,Stone.Carry the pints back from the bar,the strong plum smell feels all wrong, but the bitterness gives a terrific balance and a couple of pints flew down.

Next week scratching around for a beer, will be dull.

Not much better than last week, but a slight improvement.
    Darkstar hophead
    Darkstar American Pale Ale
    Wild Weather Black Night
    Twickenham Naked Ladies
    Fullers Wild River (bottle)
    Shepherd Neame Spitfire
Tillingbourne A.N.O.B. Strangely named but BOTW.

Next week will be along similar lines.

A day in Shopshire saw some nice beers and some horrible steep hills.

    Holden's Black Country Mild 3.7%
    Hop Back Citra 4.0%*
    Nelson Green Horn 4.0%
    Cameron's Strongarm 4.0%
    Dickensian David Hopperfield 4.0%
    Hook Norton Lion 4.0%
    Portobello Star 4.3%
    Goff's Merlin 4.3%
    Dickensian Nicholas Nicklebeer 4.4%*
    Hackney Brewery Calypso Eldorado 4.6%
Highland Brewing Co. Orkney IPA 4.8%*
Holden's The Man With The Holden Gun 4.8%
    Ringwood Fortyniner 4.9%
    Holden's Special 5.1%*
    Backyard Penda Black IPA 5.5%*
    Wadworth's Mermaid's Red 5.7%
    Naylor's Old Ale 5.9%
    Siren Empress Stout (bottle) 8.5%

The Nicholas Nickelbeer is a low ABV IPA or APA. The winner is the Hop Back Citra at £3.00 a pint in the Holden's Codsall Station. I wondered what the price of this may be in one of their own Southern pubs. It's easy to forget that Hop Back were the original purveyors of these pale hoppy beers. It's many years since I've had one of their beers in this good condition and the Holden's Special was pretty good too.

Not a great week flavour wise
    stewarts -dacota
    by the horns -the saint
    couple of brewdog beers (tasteless)
    moor -simplicity
    roosters -fresh hop
    dark star -nha (good)
    tempest -emanation
thornebridge -Bayern (keg (good but too fizzy)
    mad hatter -fat stout (good)
so after drinking these beers and still not really found one that hits the spot its got be a tried and trusted brew
BOTW is Kirkstall -pale ale superb taste and condition in the ever impressive Cask Pub and Kitchen.

    Off m'beer:
Thought I'd try and find some Kent Green Hop Beer-it seems thin on the ground in my part of Kent, but I was unsuccessful in the time allowed.
My sole beer, and Beer of the week is-Westerham 1965 Special Bitter Ale 4.8%abv, an old school best bitter with the familiar heft of hops, but also a shovel of malt.A bit on the sweet side for me, but my taste buds are still a bit out of sorts, and the ABV is out of my comfort zone.

    BOTW Hop Back Citra
I had a pint of Hop Back Citra Here last month at the handsome price of £2.75 , Its Hop Backs original pub where they began brewing and all Hopback beers are under three quid,if you ever find your self in Salisbury its well worth the little trek up the hill from the main town, all the beers were in excellent condition.
