Early entry this week as no more proper beer for a couple of weeks.

Pictish Citra. At last a beer from the new brewer at Pictish that lives up to his predecessor. 4.5% of dangerous stuff.

    In The Baum of course.

    Not a bad week :-

    Welton's Horsham Pale 3.7%
    Wild Card Pale Ale 3.8%
    Adnam's Topaz 4.0%
    Sharp's Doom Bar 4.0%
    Caveman Citra 4.1%
    Shepherd Neame Spitfire 4.2%
    Wantsum Turbulent Priest 4.4%
    Old Dairy Gold Top 4.5%
    Hackney American Pale Ale 4.5%
    Loddon Bamboozle 4.8%
    Harviestoun Schiehallion 4.8%
Wild Card Queen Of Diamonds IPA 5.0%
    Truman's Ditto IPA 5.0%
    Westerham Tripel Jump 5.0%
Caledonian Barley Brown's Black IPA 5.2%
    Kent Boss' Brew 5.5%
    Wadworth's Kalamazoo American Ale 5.8%

A visit to the Caveman Brewery Tap produced three beers that I'm sure would have been fine if they were not cloudy and warm, a big disappointment. Of the rest the local Wild Card Brewery Pale Ale was a very fine cooking beer and the Queen of Diamonds IPA, although containing some New World hops has a bitterness without the floral aroma and taste that many of the new brewer's IPAs have. The bitterness is still fairly relentless which suits me fine and it sailed through the three pint test.
However the two contenders are Kent Boss' Brew and Caledonian Barley Brown's Black IPA. The Boss' brew is a house beer for the Paper Moon in Dartford and as they don't brew a 5.5% pale I imagine it is a blend. It's a superb Strong Golden Ale. The Caledonian Black IPA is everything a Black IPA should be so we can add Caledonian to Adnam's, Banks's and Thwaites who have done a proper job with the Spoons American beers. Compare that with the dismal Wadworth's Kalamazoo which is about as American as Vladimir Putin. The Black IPA was on early in the Hamilton Hall (£3.10) as it isn't due until mid August so should be around for a few weeks.

BOTW Caledonian Barley Brown's Black IPA

The week I drank lager beer.
Goody Ales-Bleangate Brewery-Good Innings 4.6%abv. Not at its best, like the Indian batsmen this week. Not many of the citrus hops on show.
Westerham Brewery-Bohemian Rhapsody 4%abv. I'm not a lager drinker, but really enjoyed this : pale, with gentle hops and a long bitter finish.Served by handpump, this is the first lager that hasn't had that unpleasant metallic grainy backtaste that puts me off.
    Musket-Muzzleloader 5%abv.A dark chestnut strong 'un.Woodsmoke,malt led.

Against all my prejudices, my BOTW is Westerham-Bohemian Rhapsody, taken, together with the Musket, at the ever interesting The Plough Inn at Stalisfield Green.

A fairly decent week helped out with a visit to Salisbury last Thursday.
    Darkstar Hophead 3,8%
    Darkstar American Pale Ale 4.7%
    Darkstar Brewers Reserve 4.5%
    Stonehenge Spire 3.8%
    Timothy Taylor Landlord 4.3%
    Hopback GFB 3.5%
    Hopback Summer Lightning 5.0%
    Hopback Citra 4.0%
    Hopback Taiphoon 4.2%
    Badger Brewers Bee 4.4%
    Wadsworth Henry IPA 3.6%
    Langhams Arapaho 4.9%
    Langhams Sundowner 4.2%

BOTW goes to Hopback Citra enjoyed in The Wyndham Arms.

A trip to the GBBF on Wednesday followed by a trip likely to be Weymouth on Friday should turn up a decent list for next week.
