I only awarded a score of 2 to two pubs in 2023 and Worst Pub of 2023 goes to

Not many to choose from (just 57 new visits last year), but has to be Neptune in Selsey. On reflection, my review doesn't do its worst attributes justice.

Most new pubs I visited were average at worst. So I’ll give the prize to my former local Eagle & Child for turning a historic village pub into a glorified nightclub with generic fizz on the bar. Thanks to whatever dismal chain has taken it over.

Some absolute rotters last year, but the two scores of one I dished-out were

    Plymouth Inn

    and

    The Northcote Arms

In a shoot-out the Plymouth Arms edges it.

Looks like The Northcote was OK based on the five reviews before you and Tris (one of them mine). I'm guessing PSM's review was a retrospective one, as April 2020 was mid-lockdown, so its decline must be post-Pandemic-related.

As I was in the area yesterday and partly spurred on by this thread I had a look at The Northcote myself and found what appears to be a thriving community pub with three cask on , my Beerblefish Hoppy Pale was perfectly acceptable, NBSS 3. The vibe was good though Quinno is right about the heritage aspect, or lack of it, when I catch up on reviews It'll get a 6/10 though I reckon 6.5, Quinno must have caught a bad day (or did I catch a good one).

I agree. The heritage value is modest - it only has * so I wasn't expecting The Salisbury Hotel - but the cask beer was in the wrong room, which can't be accessed without going out and in again; this is part of CAMRA's criteria for citing pubs, the original room layout retained.
