2 pour moi - The Sarries in Symonds Yat for a Dads/Lads weekend a few years back, and The Rashleigh in Polkerris, Cornwall, after an ex-girlfriend and I had left the nearby Eden Project desperate for "a pint and a pasty by the sea" - it certainly ticked those boxes.

Flicking through I counted 15 visited, I may have missed a couple, but some of the entrants are no way top two hundred.

It was just half that number last time this site was posted: Top 100 pubs in England…

This is list overload for me. I got the impression that the slant is on rural pubs with an emphasis on food. I've been to some of them (maybe just scraping double figures?). The only two that really caught me eye were the Sole Bay Inn at Southwold which I may not be that keen on today. The other is the Cat at West Hoathly which I knew as a Beard's pub. I've been to all of the Adnam's pubs in Southwold and Walberswick (assuming there are no new ones) and also visited all the Beard's pubs in the days when there was a beer mat with the Harvey's pubs on one side and the Beard's ones on the other. Another one noted was the Three Chimneys at Biddenden but I'd rather not go into that given that I was the most sober one on that totally shambolic day.
Of these 200 "best pubs" I have done a massive three!
The Dalesman Inn
The Lion
The Watermill Inn
I wasn't that taken by the Dalesman in Sedbergh but the Lion at Settle and Watermill at Ings are pretty nice; the Watermill brews its own beers which always helps raise a pub in my estimations!
I haven't even heard of half the place names of the pubs on that list, let alone visited the pubs within. I can't help noticing that most of these pubs seem to be quaint country dining pubs and the cynical part of me can't help thinking that some "researcher" has enjoyed going round the country visiting them all on an all expenses paid basis. Nice work if you can get it, but where are the city centre pubs, micropubs etc? I'm not expecting any flat roof estate pubs to make it in the list but a bit of variety would give a bit of balance.
