I noticed that yesterday and it made me take a look at their website. They seem to be a pretty eccentric bunch (Indoor Wassailing, Worm Charming etc...), so an upside-down pub name doesn't seem that out of place.

I came across this one in Reeth, North Yorkshire

The previous owner was in a dispute with the local authorities regarding "improvements" made to the front of the pub that they didn't like. He hung the pub sign upside down in protest and it has stayed that way ever since.

The Swan at Little Totham also has a Cask Marque sign upside down as a protest against something but since Cask Marque is a voluntary scheme I don't know why the guy just doesn't come out of it if he doesn't agree with it.

Nothing to do with the origin of this thread, but 'What The...' seems appropriate.

I have just rec'd the attached link, with a question about the journalist's name - can it really be?

Yes well spotted. For some strange reason it reminds me of Captan Pugwash.

New Scientist regularly does those sort of things under Nominative Determinism, once removed I guess in this case.

Nom, Nomanim, Nomomianst.??? !!!! My dictionary does not have words like that in it so it cant be mucky. Sounds like something out of a Vetinary Compedium of what a cat might suffer from. You know ,like round worm.
