I can see the simple fairness in having a North/Midlands/South rota .I suppose Oxford,Cambridge and St Albans would all fit a "South" description.

    But THAT far south?

I suggest the next northern one is in Berwick on Tweed or Penrith then.

Or if hondo is feeling a bit left out how about Aberdeen or Perth?
    Some cracking pubs in Berwick-Upon-Tweed!

I wouldn't have problem with any of those, though I must admit Northampton hasn't pinged my radar before!

We may have to have two summer trips as the restraints for many are the same, I couldn't afford (or justify financially, Leeds and even Worcester was a little on the rich side for me currently). A little sad but maybe a North /South divide is needed for some?

Sticking to that rota would mean it would always be the Midlands in spring, the South in summer and the North in the autumn. I suggest we try to be a little more flexible.

Northampton's an interesting idea, and fairly easy to get to from Manchester, Liverpool or Sheffield, though the journey starts to take on nightmare proportions for anyone coming from the direction of Leeds.

Derby is obviously much more accessible from all over the country and is chock full of great pubs. The idea of rotating North/Midlands/South is superficially attractive from the point of view of sharing the pain, but to say, for example, that Worcester is in the Midlands, therefore we can't do Derby next doesn't make too much sense to me.

I would consider Bristol, Oxford or St Albans as doable by train from Sheffield, but then I'm a bit of a pub crawl nut and would go stupid distances for a day out in a good real ale town. The first two named also have quite reasonable trains to/from Manchester & Liverpool. I wouldn't particularly want to do Cambridge though, unless Luton Town happened to be playing there too.

I have looked at doing Northampton has i have never been there, the last time i tried we were given a police escort away from the town because we were football supporters.

I found the ticket prices from both Nottingham and Derby far too much to get there,i even tried Birmingham to Northampton from both New Street and Moor Street, but it still cost £16 return from Birmingham.

I only posted this to try and help out.

Yes, it seems to be one of those places with no cheap tickets available - I've found cheap fares to Milton Keynes, which is further away. perhaps Trainman can enlighten us?

I've twice set out on London Midland Great Escape, intending a Rugby-Northampton combo, but trains and time conspired against on each occasion meaning Northampton is still virgin territory for me.
Think I only had 3 pubs on my list there though - I wouldn't imagine it to be a single destination mission for discerning PGers?
