Back to earth with a bump, after last week's blow-out. Just the four tried, but at least they were in the excellent surroundings of The Old Cock, Otley.

    Brass Castle - Bad Kitty.
    Ridgeside - Eclipse.
    Briscoes - Pale Ale.
    Goose Eye - Blackmoor.

    Easy winner was the Eclipse.

Good to see Ridgeside are still producing top quality ales.

Some quality bottled beers this week including Marble Earl Grey IPA, Lagonda IPA and Dobber in addition to Titanic Plum Porter. All excellent.

Just one cask ale sampled but it was in top nick: BOTW Oakham Bishops Farewell.

TBH, I've found them a bit erratic of late, but they seem to have hit a vein of form again with the Eclipse.

Fresh barrel just on and it was after a very dodgy Black Sheep Bitter so the contrast was very evident, tried in Wensleydale on Saturday night scored a very rare 5.

The Jaipur and the Lagonda were good but maybe a little tired, both in different pubs in Bradford on Sunday lunchtime but both scored 3 on this occasion.

That's reminded me, I must start scoring regularly this year.

Lots of beer this week with judging at the Manchester Winter Ales Festival & a weekend in York.

In our blind tasting judging at the fest Ulverston Fra Diavolo turned out to be our winner of the Old Ales & Strong Mild category.

The results and identities hadn't been announced before I had a half of it at the festival bar and thought it was excellent.

It finished 4th overall. So there must have been some bloody great beers in the top 3.

It's going to finish second in my personal judging as well.

BOTW is going to be Anarchy Brew Co, Quiet Riot South Pacific IPA tried in Pie & Ale in the N/4 after the beer festival.

I had a pint without realising it was 6.6%, so dangerous as well.
A pub is for life not just for Christmas
