I saw on the news today that Paul Hogan has been living in the US for some years and he has been stopped from leaving Australia after going to his mother's funeral. Something to do with an unpaid tax bill!

I'm sure I was taught it is always a proper noun, but according to the Internets you are right. I would like to blame it on the Americans or something but I don't think that is the case.
