Default FAO Conrad - Bristol pub requests

    Hi Conrad!

My friend going to Bristol tomorrow so he asked me if I know any decent pubs especially real ale pubs.

Since you are living in Bristol so.. Mangotsfield area and near Bristol Temple Meads station.

    Many thanks!

Actually if anyone else wants to help me out here it would be sensible, an_ecumenical_matter is by far the superior expert.

Mangotsfield is a bit of an ask, not sure I have ever drunk there. But for Temple Meads I would definitely say whilst waiting to catch the train that the Knights Templar is invaluable, a JDW which displays the train times in the pub, 3-4 minutes to walk onto the platform. Towards the centre there is the traditional choices of the Cornubia and Seven Stars.

Have a look at this Pub Crawl by Millay, a better guide than I could provide to be honest.

Mangotsfield looks a little way out, so our tour didn't extend that far, in fact most of our targets were in the opp (W/SW) direction, but Cornubia, Seven Stars, & King's Head are all within half mile of BTM and all worth a visit. I'd be interested to hear state of play at Cornubia, after reading that the failing Hidden Brewery have been messing the pub about.

Thats intriguing, I may have to pop in next week, is it just that or any suggestion the pub is actually suffering?

Seriously?! I would love that in my local JDW but instead of train timetable, Bus timetable!

BTW thanks for your help and I will pass it on to my mate.

Yep, it is a really good feature of the pub (when it works). It is not somewhere I would choose to go for an enjoyable nights drinking, but on the way to the train station it is a fantastic help.

We may get an update from a_e_m, but he said that the opening hours had been cut and that Luke was getting grief. Having seen that they lost their short tenure at Salisbury Chough, and having had a miserable experience myself at Wylye Bell, the Cornubia may be the last functional outlet, but sounds like the fat lady's warming up...

Bad news, I'll go and grab a drink there next week and see for myself.

Well have been in and can confirm that there have been changes.

Luke has gone and Phil & Jackie are now running the place, it looked largely the same to me, still 7 pumps, although 3 of which were being re-barreled (sensible move given tonight is the local CAMRA meeting). Exchanged a couple of words with Phil just to confirm he had been running it for 3 weeks now, seemed a warm enough bloke and the barman was friendly, I quite enjoyed my sausage baguette and half a Quantock Stout which went down quite nicely.

I was mildly amused to see this sad testament to a constant problem Luke used to have:

I'm guessing he may not have left the keys to the padlock. Hope he is doing alright as I know a lot of people had warm words for him, and he clearly was doing a good job in many ways at the Cornubia.
