I am going to the Valley of Beers next sat and sun. Are all the top beer pubs within walking distance of the centre or would it be best to get a bus /tram weekend pass assuming they do one.These are some of the pubs .hallamshire house, dada, devonshirecat, hillsborough, gardeners, wellington, kelham island, ,harlequin and shakeespear. cheers john

Fantastic! Supertram covers you for the day on tram & bus around the centre and immediate region for ~£3.50, i'd always go for that - maybe first go out from stn to New Barrack Tav/Hillsborough Htl (~15mins) & work back from there? I love the 'bottom wellie' Wellington, despite sometimes grumpy bar staff, and from there you're near the fat cat/KIT & newly fabulous Shakespeare! Look out the tram stop for Bath Hotel (university?), & a few other suggestions which will no doubt follow...

We pop into the Tap on platform 1 first, then get the tram one stop (if you have a pensioner bus pass it's free). From there we walk the pubs which is easy to do - even Ray with his stick. Walk down to the Harlequin, then Riverside, then walk to the Gardeners Rest. Walk back to Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern and Shakespeare - all close together, then up to Wellington. Tram to West Street to go down to Devonshire Cat and walk to Henry's.

If you get the tram from station to Hillsborough Hotel you can work your way back via Gardeners down the hill, then to Cat, Kit, Shakespeare, Riverside, Harlequin.

So many ways of doing it really, but if you have 2 days, no problem.

If you're just planning on doing the Valley of Beer then Gill's plan is a good one, but you should stay on the tram one more stop (to Bamforth Street) and walk down the hill to New Barrack Tavern before returning to the Hillsborough Hotel. And as Trainman points out, the Bottom Wellie, despite occasional grumpiness behind the bar, is not to be missed. Possibly a more logical sequence would be:
Wellington
Hillsborough Hotel
New Barracks Tavern
Gardeners Rest
Riverside
Harlequin
Fat Cat
Kelham Island Tavern
Shakespeares

You mention The Hallamshire House - this is a bit of a walk or a bus ride from the centre, but if you're going, then pop into The Closed Shop just across the road, which has been expensively refurbished and is now much better than my review of November 2011 (sorry, haven't got around to updating it yet) with good quality and better choice of beer. The Hallamshire and Dada (and ROB's suggestion of the Bath Hotel) are owned by Thornbridge, so there's not a lot of choice on the beer front - not a problem for those who like Thornbridge beers, I know. (Is it just me that doesn't?)

See also my pub crawl Sheffield pub crawl by bus (not the usual suspects). The all day bus-and-tram ticket which was £4.90 at the time that I wrote this crawl is now only £4.30 - there's progress for you! (And at only 60p more than the all-day tram ticket, it's worth getting "just in case".)

I'm thinking of doing a second version of this crawl as I want to add The Mount Pleasant, which is a bit of a bus ride but worth it. Also I was thinking of cutting two or three of Fox & Duck, The York, Ranmoor Inn and Bull's Head Hotel which are all just a bit too close together and none of them particularly outstanding. The Rising Sun Inn, on the other hand, is well worth the bus trip.

Its my real ale crawl the other 3 with me like foreign beer and lagers.The rules are if they find a really good pub or get tired of walking I shoot off and meet them for breakfast.This has worked before in Berlin, Munich and Manchester so I will probably get to chase round lots of pubs.

Great weekend in Sheffield.Great beer-pubs -prices-and people.Went to the sheff tap-Hillsborough-gardeners-harly-fat cat -dev cat-kelham-shaky-dada-riverside-swim inn-museum -showroom-grapes -dog and partridge -ship.They wouldn,t serve us in the bath hotel no problem with that.Wellington was shut Sun afternoon. Shame.
