Perhaps, then, it might be instructive to see if there are cheaper options for 'the South' - Bristol, Bath, Oxford...? Or we could shunt the date forward by a month to allow for advance tickets?

From Leeds to Bristol (no breaks or cards) - £61 Sat £100 Fri
From Leeds to Oxford - £55 Sat £85 Fri
From Leeds to Brighton - £74 either day

Southern will do you singles to/from Victoria/Brighton for £5, although these are Advances and tie you to a specific train - East Coast may well have similarly restrictive (albeit a little pricier) deals for Leeds/Kings Cross. In fact I see that they have - £22.15 each way for Saturday 13th.
Anyway, I'm tempted by a Reading trip (obviously Brighton's handy too).
