    Default 2012 Stats round up

First off a very belated happy new year to everyone out there!

I hope to get to have a beer with as many of you as possible during 2013, on which note if anyone hasn't seen the plans for a meet in Leicester on March 22nd then they should check out this thread. To anyone who hasn't been to a PG meet before it is well worth considering, there are likely to be around 20 of us and we'll spend the afternoon (usually midday-ish till about 7pm) going round 8-10 pubs. There is clearly no obligation to drink in all of them, I'm usually the biggest lightweight and will stick to halves with the odd coke at some pubs. So if you think you might fancy it do come along, we are a friendly bunch.

Anyway following on from the 2011 stats round up I've been thrashing away at my calculator to add the 2012 stats to the lists. And here they are....

The 8,672 reviews were of 7,162 different pubs and written by 691 different reviewers. As quite a few people were on a mission to try new pubs it is interesting to see that 2,831 pubs that were previously unreviewed got their first review in 2012.

The 36,922 photos were of 15,734 different pub and taken by 219 different photographers.

There are 65,947 pubs on the site of which 53,554 are marked as open. Of those open pubs 23,385 (43.7%) have at least one review and 40,138 (74.9%) have at least one photo.

During the year there were a total of 2.1 million visits to the site, up a bit from the 1.9 million in 2011. To put that into context there are an average of around 5,750 visits to the site every day.

Thanks for that Dave. Very interesting reading.

Come on photographers only 13416 open pubs to go.

Us reviewers have a hell of a long way to go though.

cheers for the stats Dave. I've been pretty slack the last few months, hoping to get back into the swing of things after I have sorted out the Reading & Mid Berks Ale Trail at the end of Jan, along with our GBG entries...

Indeed, I thought you wood have reviewed Hall & Woodhouse in Portishead by now!

It's interesting that there were 691 unique reviewers last year, but 1,252 new members. Even if you assume that nobody who joined prior to 2012 wrote any reviews (which clealry isn't the case) that's still only 55% of new members who bothered to leave a review.

Why become a member and not leave a review? Anyone can read the content. I suppose they could join to add a pub or upload a photo, but that seems unlikely.

Clearly BitE does still lead the way with reviews when it comes to quantity, but I reckon there are roughly 28,500 open UK pubs with one review over there compared to our 23,385. So starting to get quite close on one count of quantity as well as being way ahead in terms of quality!

It is madness and has always been the case. Some clearly do join just to submit a new pub or photo, or for that matter to send us corrections.

Most of them just sign up and do nothing though, I think I once worked out that only 1 in 5 new members actually ever contribute anything. I can only assume that the other 4 were expecting to get a free beer by signing up!

I went there over Xmas so I have photos and a review to add...funny place, very expensive but has a certain element of uniqueness. Radio 4 Extra in the bogs was an unusual touch.

Thanks for the stats, Dave. very interesting. On a local level, in Sheffield there are 489 open pubs, of which only two are without photos, both of them added during 2012 (though to be fair, they were there all along, just not listed). I've been meaning to get out to them but in this weather...

I know that closed pubs are a different kettle of fish, but I think it enhances the site to have photos of them wherever possible. I have started adding some notes in the review fields of closed pubs that I know about, or have been able to find some information about, even if it's only that I've visited the site where the pub used to stand and found that it has been demolished. This hopefully saves other users from duplicating the effort to go out there and photograph them before it's too late. (I got to this one about six months too late, judging by the state of the building site.) By my count there are 110 closed pubs without photos in Sheffield, of which about a quarter have "reviews" of this sort.

My "new pubs mission" starts this weekend when it looks like the weather will scupper the football in Nuneaton, leaving me to trawl around the pubs instead (groan). Sixteen open pubs, only five with photos and four with reviews.

    Thanks for the update Dave.

That should act as a nice little fillip to us all.

Thanks for the latest stats Dave,

My intention for this year is to do as many new pubs to me as possible and i will try and do pubs where other reviewers dont go to,when not adding new reviews i will try and only add reviews and photos of pubs that have not been reviewed or photographed yet from my older notes.

Yet again i wiil have to leave doing my London reviews untill a later date, these are well over a thousand which i did in a 5 year period from 2004 untill 2009.
