Oh dear. Judging by his other pubs it's goodbye to an historic York pub, hello to yet another dreadful food outlet.

I have a few days in York with the family later in November and haven't been for a few years. Does anyone have any recommendations for outstanding, must visit pubs? Unfortunately I probably won't have the chance for a wider crawl but hope to sneak a visit or two to the very best of this well served city.

Some personal favourites, all among the "real heritage pubs" on Camra's regional inventory of historic interiors:

    The Blue Bell
    Golden Ball
    The Swan
    Minster Inn
    The Phoenix Inn
    Come On You Hatters!

Apart from the Minster I'd agree with that list, for more modern beers ie citrusy IPAs

    York Tap
    Brew York

and my third favourite pub in York
    The Maltings

The York Brewery pubs are usually good
    The Last Drop Inn
    The Three-Legged Mare
    The Yorkshire Terrier

as are the ex-Leeds brewery pubs (now Camerons)
    Duke of York
    The Eagle & Child

and there's the Ossett pub with pizza opposite my favourite York pub the Blue Bell
    The Hop

For somewhere a bit different there's
    House of the Trembling Madness

Obviously a lot depends on which part of the city you are in and time constraints, but York is full of excellent pubs, I might retire there.
