The Harp was reliable as always and had some top pints there including Fyne Highlander (floral ),Dark Star Smoked Porter (rich) and Dark Star Old Chestnut (smooth) but BOTW goes to Mighty Oak Venom, one of their monthly specials with the usual snake reference ,a beautiful stout with a hint of honey yet a hoppy finish served in The Old Cross Tavern ,Hertford.

Mighty Oak are now pushing into the category of outstanding brewers as far as I am concerned ,I have enjoyed some wonderful brews from them this year.

Pushing through Warwickshire next week,I will need some warming ale.

    3rd Moorhouses Ruby Witch.

Very good week for beer, managing two sessions in Leeds. One was pretty much devoted to the 'spoons fest, with some pretty mediocre offerings, overall. However, Saturday afternoon was much better, taking in some of the city's finest. Tried this week:

    Thwaites - Crafty Devil.
    Moorhouses - Ruby Witch.
    Tree Brewery - Thirsty Beaver.
    Brouwerij t ij - Ijbok.
    Svyturys - Baltios.
    Avery - Three Point Five.
Birra Del Borgo - Totto Fa Brodo.
    Roosters - Franklin.

    Collingham - Artisan's Choice.
    Durham - Black Velvet.
    Moorhouses - Black Cat.
    Leeds - Gathering Storm.
    Kirkstall - Three Swords.
    Saltaire - South Island Pale.
    Ilkley - Green Goddess.
    Roosters - Astro
    Hawkshead - Cumbrian Five Hop.

Very difficult to pick a winner, but I think the Five Hop just shades it.

Lots to pick from this week, mostly from my time in Nottingham. A few that really stick in the memory include Lincoln Green Tuck Porter, Copthorne Black Beauty, Navigation Classic IPA and Fyne Highlander.

BOTW however, goes to the sublime pint of Saltaire Triple Chocoholic that I enjoyed in the Lincolnshire Poacher. I know it's a beer that will divide opinion (and maybe even a bit gimmicky?), but I savoured every last drop and it was the perfect beer to start the second day of my crawl - shame nothing else that day came remotely close to it.

A quiet week pub wise, mostly an Oktoberfest and a local crawl.

    Theakstons Best Bitter
    Rudgate Blonde
    Roosters Astro
    Ishii Minagof Pale Ale
    Knaresborough Doppelbeck
    Mauldons Oktoberfest
    Augustiner Oktoberfest
    Paulaner Oktoberfest
    Lowenbrau Oktoberfest
    Hof Brau Oktoberfest
    Great Newsome Frothingham Red
    T. Taylors Landlord
    Everards Original
    Brew Co Blonde
    Great Heck Blonde
    Saltaire Triple Chocoholic
    T. Taylors Havercake Ale
Bierre del Borgo Tutto Fa Brodo

BOTW was Saltaire Triple Chocoholic, the Knaresborough Dopplebock was also excellent and the Theakstons was spot on.

Despite visiting the SIBA beer festival in Manchester, none of the beers there are going to win it.

Boggart brewery are like Marmite to many people and the brewer Mark Dade does like to experiemnt a bit.

However Boggart Meme tried several times in The Baum is a definite winner.

Light but with a tropical fruit aroma and a citrus taste (any Citra hops in there Mark?).
