It's nothing to do with the German for tree despite the pub sign.
The area around the pub is called The Baum including the nearby church St. Mary In The Baum.
The area used to be open fields in which loads of herbs grew and they were called The Balm Fields.
So Baum is simply Balm in a Lancashire accent.
As you'll find out if you get me to say both words one after another when we're in Leicester.

It will get even fuller now that I have just corrected the map point on whatpub.com and more people (Camra members) will find it!It was rammed every weekend before.

One of the regulars has posted on Tandlemans blog about all the beer tourists clogging up the pub and the regulars might move to another local pub to get a quiet pint.
Hmmm! I wonder who that could have been?
