Shipley has recently been voted the most complicated railway station so be careful. If in the area, I'd recommend getting the West Yorkshire Rider/Rover, about £6, and doing Leeds-Saltaire-Bradford Forster Square. At Bradford visit Sparrow and Corn Dolly, then get down to the Interchange station. From there you can take in Halifax then Sowerby Bridge, before switching down to the busier line via Brighouse. Change at Huddersfield and the 2 pubs on the station Grove and the Sportsman, going via Dewsbury back to Leeds.

Shipley station may be complicated but if you drank in all those places mentioned above and with all those changes,there must be every chance of going seriously wrong somewhere on the route

Thought I would just bump this thread as my trip is this weekend. Where is the best place for watching the footie on a Saturday afternoon ?

I will be missing the Villa and the chances of finding a pub in Yorkshire showing Southampton v Villa on a foriegn channel are remote to say the least but you never know !!

In Leeds you have Shooters Sports Bar or the Elbow Rooms. I'd give a 50/50 chance. Elbow Rooms advertises its games outside in advance, but in Shooters you just have to look around. Shooters usually has a couple of ales on, but I generally go for the safer Brewdog bottles in the fridge. The best Elbows can do is Guinness.

Best pubs for sport with decent beer are Graziers on Market Street and Henry Boons. An outside punt is the Black Rock. The HD Sports Bar has loads of screens, but just sells fizz unfortunately.

You mentioned staying in a Premier Inn, which one? There are three in Wakefield. Also, the do at the rugby club - do you mean Sandal RUFC? If you let me know where the service is being held, I'll point you in the right direction for a swifty beforehand.

The do is at Wakefield Wildcats Stadium. I have no idea where the service is as I have no intention of going to it !! I am a confirmed Athiest and the only church I attend is the Church Tavern. I shall spend the afternoon trawling round the pubs .

You're actually only 10 minutes walk away from the centre. If you were to follow the Denby Dale Road straight over Ings Road you'll arrive at Graziers and the Bull & Fairhouse. If you look at a PuG map you'll see Harry's and The Hop are also quite close by. Fernandes isn't that far away, but in the opposite direction.

There are no pubs near the rugby ground at all these days. The closest decent pub is the Fernandes Tap. Fortunately, there's a taxi office just round the corner. Regarding the Queens and Holmfield, I've not been in either for years, although I believe they still do ale on hand pump. For what it's worth, there's a new branch of Majestic, just opened, a 100 yards or so from the Queens.
