    Default Leicester pubs

The annual trip is fast approaching, so I'm after recommendations. The usual routine is Globe (unless we're running late) and The Pub pre-match, followed by Swan & Rushes and Criterion (for pizza as well as beer) after. I think that, when we were in Liverpool, Real Ale Ray recommended a place close to the Criterion, but for some reason, the exact details seem to have slipped my mind.

    Cheers for any assistance.

Hi Paul, the pub I told you about is The Shakespeares Head. It's about 3 mins walk from the Criterion, with excellent beer and the prices are great too. It's a 1960s pub with original features, also the locals are very friendly. The Barnsley Bitter and Oakwell Dark Mild were especially good.

Gill rates The Salmon, haven't been there yet, but it's defo on my to do list!

The Salmon is definately one not to miss in Leicester now, and the Longstop which is close by is worth popping in too. We had Mad Mushroom brewery there, a first brew and a couple of Julian Church beers among those tried when we were there while Leicester beer fest was on. Both have had beer festivals and both keep good beers.

Thanks both. I see that The Shakespeares Head has received a new review! I'll add the pubs to the list and we'll see how we're doing for time.

seems you have the key targets on your list.
Shakespeare's Head is a real 70s throwback and just Barnsley Bitter & Mild, albeit in excellent condition at an incredibly good price.
If you're on a time-limit you won't be able to get out to Cow & Plough in Oadby, but put it on a list for when you have longer.
Looking forward to trying The Pub myself, I believe it kinda replaced Out of the Vaults/Vin IV which was still open when I was last there.
I like the traditional feel of the Globe, and a wander round reveals several sections including snug.
Barley Mow is probably nearest the station and a safe bet for a good range of Everards if you want a last pre-train stop.

Pretty much - same manager, I believe. There's a bigger beer range, though, and the bogs are a whole lot cleaner!

Good call, although a more likely first port of call. Return to the station is usually a little bit rushed after pizza (and beer!) in the Criterion.

You could try this one The Western.

It's a bit west on the other side of the water so may be too far off radar, although it is towards the ground and the Leicester crowd does drink in there on match days,
can be combined with the Black horse, which is a nice little cosy Everards outlet, if you have time.

The Billy beers were a bit off form last time I was in, but they seemed to be compensating with a good range of guests..

Think you're right, Gann - we'll be in the centre and it all tends to be a bit of a rush on the day.

Leicester's close enough to London, though, to make a full pub day out a possibility, as long as East Midlands Trains can offer cheap fares.

Off to Leicester Saturday, £36 (£9 each) is getting 4 of us there & back, yes, you guessed it, my old pals at megatrain.
I've already been blackballed from going out to Oadby due to time constrictions but, if I can't change minds, I'll have to sample the other Steamin Billy pub (Western) which Ray's review suggests was on good beer form recently. Very much looking forward to The Pub.
I guess the centre may be a little quiet with the Tigers down at Twickenham...
