Default The London 2012 Olympics Thread

I know there's still a few months to go yet but I thought we should have a thread to share our thoughts and experiences. Things like events being attended, best pubs near venues, plans during the games, first sighting of those inevitable Olympic beers etc.

My Olympic tickets have just come through ... for a BA return flight to Gibraltar . As I work in London I know how manic it can be during 'tourist season' and the thought of what it will be like during the games fills me with dread . Like most London businesses my company has been asked to help by reducing the number of staff travelling in to Central London so I'm giving them a hand and have taken two weeks off.

The problem is that almost every hotel in our green and pleasant land has decided to at least double their prices, or hold onto their rooms hoping to profit from last minute bookings . So to avoid having to watch the games with Johnny Foreigner and unintelligible commentary I hatched my cunning plan. I burned all of my BA Avios on a flight to Gibraltar where I'll be spending 8 days flitting between the Clipper, the Trafalgar, the Horseshoe and whatever new pubs have sprung up since I was last over there. Might even try my luck at the casino. Another 'gamble' could be hopping across the border and winding up the Spanish border guards every time GB wins a medal .

So that's my plan, English beer, ordered in English, paid for in English currency, watching English TV, in a Mediterranean climate and about 1,000 miles from London.

    How about you?

Two weeks sailing out of Corunna. I predict a whole load of airport bar reviews in August/September time.

Actually, it re-raises the old chestnut of reviews outside UK - I'd love to see Millay's reviews of Gib pubs.

    Our first Olympic experience.

We are currently on a caravan site in Old Windsor to attend the Egham beer festival ( had 48 different excellent beers between us over 3 days) and the next Egham fest is 16 - 19 August. When we went to book the site we were told it would go from £20 a night to £40 a night because of the Olympics, and that it was cheap as some places have tripled the costs, so we have booked into the Camping and Caravanning club site in Chertsey. Not so easy to get to Egham, but we are not prepared to be ripped off. Club site with better facilities is around £27 per night.

Trip down to Croatia on the trains, back up through Italy. We booked the Eurostar the first day possible, looks like fares are going up already, get in while you can.

That looks an interesting trip Nick. I love arriving at Brussels on Eurostar, you look around at all the destinatons on the departure boards and almost believe you can get anywhere in the world.

It does indeed ETA, I wonder if we might get some sort of pilot for this Summer. It's 10 years since I was last in Gibraltar and looking forward to seeing how it has changed and how much more land they have reclaimed from the sea.

I recall having a pub crawl day last time when i did 11 pubs and a curry. The reviews will probably be on the other side somewhere.

Maybe you could start a forum thread for them here - that wouldn't need the functionality of the main site, What do Conrad and Dave think?

Or does that undermine the purpose of the forum?

I don't think it will be anything of that magnitude Farway but if I get decent internet access I may well do a Gibraltar thread. I seem to recall an exchange we had about Gibraltar pubs that you remembered from your time stationed there in the Royal Navy. Was that you?
