    Default Budget 2012

Well as expected Georgie did nothing about the beer duty escalator, he hardly mentioned it in fact, but he did mange to fool a lot of the medja with his slight of hand by saying "no plans to change my predecessors alcohol duty plans". Of course this was widely reported as "No Change" until the error was pointed out. George spent more time making a lame joke about Wallace and Grommit than he did on his attack on brewers, pubs and drinkers. Pro-industry my arse.

I heard Tim Martin tongue lashed the beeb for their sloppy reporting, it's now been corrected on their website.

Brewers and Publicans everywhere are writhing in pain even though we knew it was coming. This one is typical

The duty rise is from 26th March.

PS about 2500 people have signed the epetition since the budget non-announcement

Sad to say, whatever the party in power, it always comes down to tax on beer, fags & petrol. Often spun as something else, in this case fag tax as "Health"

No longer a smoker BTW, price increases do work, I stopped at 3 / 6d a packet of twenty. I think it is around £7 now

I suspect the booze increase will further reduce consumption, we all have price limits in reality

Ministers want to move towards a single tax allowance for those of working age and the retired, having set a goal of raising tax allowances for under-65s to £10,000 by 2015

That bit out of your link means us pensioners will have tax allowance frozen for 14/15 as well as 13/14.

My son had a quote that fits.

Politicians and nappies should be changed for the same reason.
Alcohol doesn't solve problems .... but then again, neither does milk.

That's because the increase in beer tax is then further taxed by VAT (increased to 20% and no sign of that coming back down). As publicans tend to work on a % margin the actual 2.2p becomes 5 quite quickly, with a bit of rounding up.
It's the one time of year the landlord can get away with putting up prices, blaming beer duty and to be fair, most of them probably need to put up prices to stay afloat, shame that once again its the responsible pub drinker that ends up paying.

I remember days when a pub landlord would drive around in quite a plush car for the day. Nowadays it seems to be more aged suzukis and nissans.

We also have a hop shortage and a poor barley harvest, plus fuel cost increases, lets say 20p a pint increase then?
