Default Wetherspoon Festival March 2012 thread

I thought this event was important enough to justify it's own thread. A place to record beers we have found, loved and hated. Given the brewery's history I'm looking forward to the first sighting and report of the Hilden Scullion's Irish Ale.

    So far I've had,

Wayfarer IPA - very nice IPA and one that I'd revisit
    Gallantry - OK but unremarkable
Imperial Russian Stout - mmmm nice but treat it with respect
Bank's Sunbeam - nice refreshing beer and I used it to freshen the palate after the Russian Stout
Moorhouse's APA - I do like American pale ales and this is a good one
I've just joined Alcoholics Anonymous - I still drink, just under a different name.

Spotted and avoided like the plague in The Regal Moon Rochdale last night.

The only festival ales I have downed so far was Skinner's Riggin' Ale and I found it rather too malty and sweet ,however that's probably the way folk in Cornwall like their beer.Passable but I didn't order a second.

In the Willow Walk after work on Thursday - they had a good range of festival ales on. I spotted Nogne O Bitter and grabbed a pint. Turned out to be an excellent 'light' traditional bitter - I could happily had had several more.

Then, across the road to Wetherspoon's at Victoria and John Martin's Pale Ale. 'Hop-flowered' apparently and it certainly did seem a little flowery. One was enough, though.

I found the HIldens Scullion Ale coming soon in Ralph Fitz Randall in Richmond but on sale in Ripon JDW and so risked a half. In the worst pretentious beer blogger tradition here's what i found.....

pours a light amber with a tight white head, the nose is fruity. The fore taste is a little thin for a 4.6% beer, there is a dry hoppy after taste of english hops.

Not an outstanding beer but OK.

ooops forgot to say I tried the Smutty Nose Merrican MILD as well. A pale ale but a low hop rate and interesting malt flavours, a bit resinous from USA hops and a metallic aftertaste, obviously a mid 20th century type MILD with a USA twist. See page 21 of the March-April Wetherspoons News for an interview with the brewer... Dave something or other (see pump clip).

Tried a few of the festival ales including the Hilden Scullion Irish Ale in the William Withering last night

Enjoyed the Hydes Owd Oak , Skinners Riggin Ale was OK , not that keen on the Wadworth Swordfish

The Scullion was initially a bit sweet with a bit of a bitter aftertaste , other than that completley tasteless

Nice to join in on the Spoons festival threads now theres a half decent one round here

Just found the Scullion, managed to finish a half but that 'medical' taste is really not my thing. Much more luck with the Wolf Whistle, nice malty and toffee tones. The Snake Slayer looks to be next or the Fullers Chiswick (what the hell is that doing in the festival?)

A quiet start for me. Just 2 so far Everards Gallantry and The Ruski Stout, neither of which floated my boat! Will be paying a visit to the 2 local 'Spoons tonight so expect to notch up around half a dozen between them.
