Default Pub sign of the year

Just seen Pete Crosby's review of the St Annes Castle in Great Leighs, Chelmsford, which mentions that the pub won the Inn Sign Society's Pub Sign of the Year award for 2011.

You can see the sign here:

I love the fact that you can see great pieces of art like this in High street's up and down the country - even if this one isn't really my cup of tea.

Ah the memories, does it still have the pond /bog between the bar and the outside Gents? Does it still have an outside gents come to that? A friend of mine fell in the pond one memorable evening, mind you that may have been because we directed him through some bushes at the pond edge, oh how we laughed, the simple pleasures and all that . You used to be able to camp in the field next door as well, extremely useful.

The Farmers Boy in St Albans caused a bit of a stir when they took down their decorative sign of a farmyard scene. They put up a bland sign that just said 'TFB', the sort you see on gastrpubs. Thanfully they bowed to public pressure and replaced it with the one shown here which was based on the original.

The Cricketers in Redbourn also had a good descriptive sign, although a bit like a cartoon. This was taken a couple of years ago and I think it might have changed now.

Not sure about camping in the field, but The Flowerpots at fairly nearby Cheriton has attached camp site, and it's own brewery, could make a good weekend break

I was rather taken with the sign at Didsbury's Station last time I passed; evocative of a scene from Poirot or suchlike, I thought...
And at the Railway, in Alton, the train comes steaming out from above the entrance...
