I see that Egypt is nearby (this isn't a joke!). It looks like Micheldever is closer but I've seen people getting off the train there who look like they are about to hike to the South Pole.
This would make Winchester a game changer for me but it would mean a Saturday visit and I would want to have an extended stay here rather than waste time going around expensive second rate pubs in...
I agree there should be a poll at the very least between Cardiff & Winchester. There is a down side to Winchester in that it's in a similar area to the last Southern outing in Portsmouth.
