A spectacular set of new ticks in Sheffield. Now up to 37.
Only visited once and didn’t bother with any of the micros but I remember the Malt N Hops being an excellent pub. I should be moving house close to Chorley soon, so looking forward to trying the rest...
I was there on Good Friday and it definitely had a bit of a rough edge in the bar, and the whole place was a bit of a mess. That said, the beer was surprisingly excellent.
Just 2 new ones this month, 24 for the year.
I did warn you all about Hopwoods ;)
Glad it was a good day - I think Preston is a superb place for beer these days, and the Black Horse is one of my favourite pubs in the country. Hopefully I can...
Have a good day all. Would have liked to make this one since it’s so nearby, but other commitments got in the way.
My lager drinking friend would be pleased by the presence of Peroni, rather than just basic Carling and Fosters etc. I struggle to taste any significant difference, but…
Cains to resume brewing after 8 years.
Almost certainly not a permanent closure (Sam Smiths don’t sell pubs off, as a rule), but it could be a lengthy one as they are really struggling to find managers to run their pubs these days.
Various ticks in Manchester and Liverpool take me to 22 for the year.
just 4 for me. Must get down to London again soon.
Café René was my favourite- quirky kind of place. Turks Head is also good, but weirdly unfriendly when I visited so only stayed for a swift one. The Pelican is supposed to be a classic but it was...
To clarify, the cask in Hopwoods is ‘only’ £5.50 a pint, I think the half that Peter Ashworth had was a keg beer. Still pretty extortionate for Preston.
Hopwoods is now open and I can report that it is eye-wateringly expensive and the cask is nothing to write home about. Nicely done inside though.
Now up to 13 after an enjoyable month. Nothing particular planned in March yet.
Continental is quite a pleasant walk through the Avenham/Miller Park, and you can always do the Winckley Ale House en route..
Your best option on Friargate is probably the impressive Plau.
Just 2 so far - slow start to the year. Largely visiting my trusted favourites at the moment. Should do much better next month.
A few people have mentioned the recent deterioration of Nicholsons pubs, and I hoped it would be a temporary Covid thing. But sadly not, it appears. my latest visit to the Philharmonic saw all 10...
TV exposé on Brewdog airing next Monday
Oh, I forgot about the City Arms! An outstanding pub. And I also ought to visit it more frequently.
None stand out as exceptionally awful this year, but I expected a cosy pub with some real ale when I entered the General Wolfe, and I found a cold soulless room with very forlorn handpulls.
Best new visits:
The Front, Falmouth
Peveril of the Peak, Manchester
Ye Olde Vic, Stockport
The Victoria, Durham
Best revisits/regular visits:
Masons Arms, Billinge
Finished up with 59. Another fairly dire year but it can only get better… can’t it?
Or perhaps some of those 20 people have taken the same stance as you! There is definitely a domino/sheep effect. I have seen quite a few people getting on a train masked, looking around and realising...
There’s also a new micro in the middle of town, Friargate Tap. I haven’t visited yet though so don’t blame me if it’s crap! :)
I believe the Plungington Hotel has gone massively downhill since...
