A day of the year on which I doubt I would have ventured to the pub anyway.

Wow! I recall that story - I never thought they could make it happen though - quite heart-warming...
Yes - visited last night, a photo proves it. It's really very impressive (at least it looks so in the dark) with a the replicated Charrington's tiling in place and a new simple period mahogany bar back with mirrors (I think the pub's interior was originally quite plain). An image from April 2019 on Google shows it nearing completion and you can easily see the join between old and new!
I think the bugger behind this is responsible for The Magdala Tavern (should reopen soon), The Old White Bear and The Chippenham Hotel, the last two boarded up for years - possibly others too.
Not very pub-like but Bucking Fastard might appreciate this version of the "Suez Crisis",
