Channelling my inner Ena Sharples or is it Minnie Caldwell? with a nice milk stout. There’s been some anti lactose comment here lately but it’s the key ingredient of milk stout.

Carry on Lactating

Your photo reminds me that I bought a can of Brew York Quaddy Modo 11.0% forest fruit and star anise quadrupel recently. Thankfully without any lactose. Ingredients include (as well as barley, hops and yeast) turbinado sugar, molasses, blackberries, blueberries, cherries and the aforementioned star anise. There are four malts listed and the hops are Mount Hood. I'm almost nervous about drinking it - what if it's absolutely terrible?
Tell you what, if I get anything else with peanuts and lactose in what is supposed to be 'beer', then I'll try to remember to bring the can with me on the next Pubs Galore crawl (assuming that there are any pubs left open by then...) and I'll swap it for a pint of the real stuff.
Well, as oldboots said, it's Brew York so is it likely to be terrible? It wasn't any preconceptions about the brewery that were bothering me, just the thought of all that fruit. What on earth does star anise taste like anyway?
I made the mistake of keeping this beer in my fridge for two or three days, so it was too cold to start with. What wasn't my fault, though, was that it was very gassy, pouring a huge head that took a while to subside. This is where being an 11% quadruple helps, because I wasn't going to be drinking this any quicker than the occasional sip, so the beer had time to warm up and to lose some of that carbon dioxide. At which point it became quite an enjoyable drink, with a lingering dryness that made up for some of the Ribenarish-ness of the initial flavour, and perhaps a hint of Belgian yeast that just may have been my imagination working overtime. The mouth feel, once the gas had subsided, was a bit thin, with not much maltiness to suggest that it's actually a beer.
I found myself feeling a little guilty, as though I really had bought a Trappist quadrupel and poured blackcurrent cordial into it, plus maybe a couple of ice cubes. As if! And anyway, even if I had, no one would ever know.
Overall impression: having recovered from the unfortunate cold, gassy start, this turned out to be a beer that I was eventually sorry to see the back of. Perhaps not to the extent of forking out £6.50 for another 440ml can, but probably scoring 6.75/10, if I can borrow london calling's metrics for a minute. (I still have no idea what star anise tastes like.)

A new one on me despite it being regularly stocked in my local Tesco. Hazy New England IPA's are a popular style with the new wave of craft beer brewers, and I found this amongst the best.Four malts give a sweet nose and smooth mouthfeel while the Cascade,Enigma,Motueka and Vic Secret hops, many dry hopped, give all the resinous character.Brewed to 6.4% and with a lingering bitterness it's a very fine brew. 9/10
Sounds like a German thing. And what is 'horehound'?

I seem to have had a lot of NEIPA's recently, and true to style they have been hazy with an orange juice appearance. So it was good to get back to this West Coast IPA brewed clear and to 5.8%,with the malts giving a subtle sweetness and a combination of Simcoe,Chinook and Columbus giving complex tastes and a deep bitterness in the finish which demand a second.I thought this was a very fine example 9/10
When I was a kid 60 years ago we used to get a sweet called horehound.A hard toffee with a bit of a medicinal taste.
Tonight got a couple bbb from Aldi which were an easy choice as all the craft beers were from the Aldi Dodgy Range. Do they sell this stuff.Probably but not for me.
First off
Dartmoor -jail ale 4.8 this won a gold medal at the international beer awards. The judges should be locked up.Real malt bomb 5.5/10
mcEwans -champion ale .still a great beer but on the maltier side. definitely cant be confused with a Niepa 7.75/10
and my last bottle of
London beer factory -zia. have gotten to like this beer and don't find it as sweet as at first but tend to mix it with any beer that I don't particularly like and don't want to finish .tonight it got mixed with the Jail ale.
Last time I checked, making a malty beer was not actually a felony, but I can see where you're coming from.
Excellent! Glad you liked the super heavy.
Coincidentally, I bought a beer the other day which is a NEIPA, so I might have to borrow your joke and use it the other way around.

It should be a felony. The champion was probably as malty but the hops give it fruity flavour that lifts it compared to the Jail ale. Rather see Champion behind bars.
cheers

A Siren delivery arrived today with a host of beers I've never sampled before.First up......
Siren -- Nitro Cold Blooded

Instructed to pour hard and fast, the head sustained and it drank smoothly. This cold steeped Porter cartainly had a mix of chocolate ,coffee and roated flavours but thankfully not too much in your face. The dryness and long finish were the over riding sensations.I've tried a lot of porters recently and this was one of the best .Sessionable at 5% . 8/10
I too had a beer delivery today, from Vibrant Forest plus a few cans from Dark Revolution also available from their online shop.
So have made a start with Attachment 2572 a dual hopped 6% IPA showcasing El Dorado and Mosaic leading to the rich tropical fruit flavours you would expect from a beer like this. Nice beer. 7.5/10
Siren -- Calypso

Accurately described as a dry hopped sour,I got the notes of citrus from the nose and then the very sharp sour.I don't mind sours but this is true to style and wont suit everybody ! Certainly cleared the palate after the previous porter. 7/10
