Does anyone else remember Well's Fargo beer? This was their response to the hugely succesful Ruddles County in the 1970s when they still had some credibility as a regional brewer. Ruddles sold out to Grand Met and Fargo was replaced with the immensely boring and increasingly watered down Bombardier.
A Charles Wells pub today might as well have a huge sign with the single word "AVOID" hung on it as far as I'm concerned.
I remember Paine's, they were dead keen on getting CAMRA groups to visit their brewery and I managed to go there twice. My rercollection is that the beer quality in their tied houses was inconsistent (and that's being kind!).
EG was far too malty and seet for me.
As an exampe of a brewery who have got things right I would select Adnam's. They haven't changed their recipes to my knowledge, all their orignal beers that I can recall are still going and thay haven't watered any down. They've also shown they can do the business with so called craft beers. Compare that to Wadworth's whose latest "American" beer for Spoons just tastes like a strong wadworth's beer.
