Glad you all had a good time.
Were there any thoughts about the location for the next one?
I think we'd informally agreed that we'd try and do a South-North-Midlands (or combination thereof) rota so no-one suffers (or maybe gains, depending on your viewpoint) overly in travelling costs/time when the cycle's done. Seeing as we've done Leeds then Worcester (which I guess most would call Midlands, yes?) then South seems the next logical choice, or certainly the one after next.
Or we could simply divvy up where everyone lives and do a 'weighted' geographical list
Depending on date, if anyone was looking at a cheapo to London, I may be able to offer 2 rooms accom before, or after, a jag to Brighton.
And don't forget to look at the amazing value of groupsave within the southerndaysave ticket, working out at £7.50 go-anywhere, if in a group of four.
Without any particular order or preference, how about one of the following?
Derby.
Bristol.
Oxford.
Cambridge.
Northampton.
St Albans.
Some cracking pubs in Berwick-Upon-Tweed!
BTW, please see my thread elsewhere, which may or may not be relevant to this discussion.
Northampton's an interesting idea, and fairly easy to get to from Manchester, Liverpool or Sheffield, though the journey starts to take on nightmare proportions for anyone coming from the direction of Leeds.
Derby is obviously much more accessible from all over the country and is chock full of great pubs. The idea of rotating North/Midlands/South is superficially attractive from the point of view of sharing the pain, but to say, for example, that Worcester is in the Midlands, therefore we can't do Derby next doesn't make too much sense to me.
I would consider Bristol, Oxford or St Albans as doable by train from Sheffield, but then I'm a bit of a pub crawl nut and would go stupid distances for a day out in a good real ale town. The first two named also have quite reasonable trains to/from Manchester & Liverpool. I wouldn't particularly want to do Cambridge though, unless Luton Town happened to be playing there too. :)
I have looked at doing Northampton has i have never been there, the last time i tried we were given a police escort away from the town because we were football supporters.
I found the ticket prices from both Nottingham and Derby far too much to get there,i even tried Birmingham to Northampton from both New Street and Moor Street, but it still cost £16 return from Birmingham.
I only posted this to try and help out.
I've twice set out on London Midland Great Escape, intending a Rugby-Northampton combo, but trains and time conspired against on each occasion meaning Northampton is still virgin territory for me.
Think I only had 3 pubs on my list there though - I wouldn't imagine it to be a single destination mission for discerning PGers?
Myself and Mr Phat have been to Northampton quite recently, and Mr P lives quite closeby,I think you may struggling to find the usual quota of 10 decent pubs for a crawl around that town unless you also want to include the distant suburbs and a few wild cards.
Rugby is better if you want a "tight" town centre and lots of pubs, some pretty good.
I'm not too fussed if the next meet-up is North, South, East, West or anywhere in-between, but if it is to be down South, I'd be happy with any of these suggestions, although I think we should save Bristol for a landmark meet-up, like the 10th Anniversary of Pubs Galore or something similar.
I'd also quite like to do Bath - not sure how easy that is to reach on the trains.
I'd agree with that. There are plenty of boozers in Northampton but I can only think of 4 which I'd describe as 'must visits' and they're a fair way from each other and from the station. Rugby has at least 6 or 7 which are GBG listed and well worth a visit and many more which'll serve you a decent pint all within a relatively small town centre. Achieving the 10 decent pub quota would be more a question of what to leave out rather than what to include.
The town centre itself is something of a walk from the station but perfectly manageable and with the opportunity for 'rests' if required. In fact there are a couple of 'must rests' between the station and centre. It may have more options travel wise as well being on the West Coast Mainline.
Never done Rugby. Unless you count sitting on a Virgin Flyer for 2 hours just outside the station.
There's also a Travelodge next to the station and a Premier Inn a bit further away.
Rugbys good for me to get to.
All depends how you want to measure it.
The original version of Regulars Reunited, the forerunner to Pubs Galore that I created (and was crap and didn't really work properly) was launched on May 22nd 2003.
Later that year on October 1st we registered pubsgalore.co.uk and Conrad set about making a version of the site that actually worked properly and audited stuff.
On January 28th 2004 we had our first audited review, which was of the Hollingwood Hotel by Alan Swain.
At some stage during that year we officially changed the name from Regulars Reunited to Pubs Galore.
Bristol it is then.... 10 years of a functioning Pubs Galore!
Or we could go to Chesterfield to visit the first reviewed Pubs Galore pub?
And Alan Swain was so dismayed that he never reviewed another pub again!
To kickstart the discussion again I would have a personal preferrence towards Rugby or Derby , as these are two towns I haven't been to for many a moon..
And falling into that category as well would be Coventry, which I've been meaning to get back to for a long while, although like Northampton, where I actually found the Shoe museum much more exciting than some of the pubs, I'm not sure it hits the 10 interesting pubs quota..
I would be quite happy with either Rugby or Derby.
Coventry is a bit better than Northampton for the number of decent pubs, and you could just about squeeze out 10 around the city centre (including the Chapelfields area) but trying to include the interesting Greyhound at Hawkesbury Junction (canal porn;) )would really use up far too much time given how far it is from the city centre.
I am really going to mess things up here, having my sites on Oxford, Cambridge or St Albans. Derby might be better left for a Midlands meet up. Agree Rugby is a good spot, I think we need some more firm suggestions from our fellow PGer's.
Well if it's 10 years of PuG, then Bristol (its home) seems like the anniversary we need.
