Next away day is Rotherham. Staying over again so should have plenty of time - any not to be missed?
Also hoping to have a couple of hours to kill in Sheffield on the way back so a few near the station ?

You could spend that in the Sheffield station Tap and run out of time...! Alternatively a quick walk to the Fat Cat and Kelham Island Tavern area although its around a mile so valuable drinking time could be lost.

Of the two remaining 'Spoons, The Bluecoat (JD Wetherspoon) is ok. The one in the town centre is likely to be a bit rough. You might like The Bridge Inn, though the beer selection is nothing to write home about.
If you've only got a couple of hours in Sheffield and want to keep it near the station, you could try The Howard, the Rutland Arms, The Red Lion and the Roebuck Tavern. Or Head of Steam and The Brown Bear (next door to each other). The better ones are further away: The Museum, The Tap & Tankard or even The Devonshire Cat (allow about 15 minutes to walk back to the station).
If you've not been to Kelham Island, it's a good 15 minutes walk to The Harlequin, then The Fat Cat and the Kelham Island Tavern are within spitting distance. Worth doing those three if you've got time to spare. If you do The Wellington as well you can then get the tram back to the station. It takes 17 minutes, which is only a little quicker than walking but has the significant advantage of not getting lost.
I did both of these on a match day a couple of years ago. The New York Tavern is quite small and was absolutely packed, but the staff were well drilled and I didn't have to wait too long to get served. The Cutlers Arms was also pretty busy, but there was still quite a bit of space to move around and the staff were on the ball here too. There was a good atmosphere in both, with fans from both teams happily mixing without any trouble.Quote:

If you do do the Sheffield pubs near Shalesmoor tram stop, please include Shakespeares , not mentioned by Will - I think maybe he must have been barred from a previous version of the pub and not been back!
ps. I do love the ('bottom') Wellie but you need to like hoppy beers ( I do) - Little Ale Cart specialise in them...
pps. The Hillsborough Hotel used to be the ('top') Wellie before anyone starts reading anything into that!
Happened to do a quick spin around Rotherham last night, visiting the Cutler's Arms, New York Tavern, Rhinoceros (JDW), County (only because it hadn't been reviewed before) and Bridge - mostly (County excepted) at or above expectations.Quote:
