Hello, I am 42 yrs old and am planning an English Pub tour for me and my friends in the Spring of 2008. With so many great choices I am requesting advice on best cities to visit for a 5 or 6 day trip from the U.S.A. This will be my first trip to England. I would like to focus on only one town per day with options for daytime sightseeing, and then evening pub visits. Thank you, Paul
Well having lived there many moons ago I would have to suggest Bath for the daytime sightseeing, an amazing place to visit, and good for our American cousins whose heritage is a little younger than ours. Trouble is I would struggle to come up with a good pub crawl through the town having not visited for years now.
Hopefully some of our members will bail me out though and come up with some better ideas, we have a few members who maintain their own local web sites so maybe some of them will come forward and put in their case (Filo, you know I am thinking of you here).
Sadly I don’t think we have any dedicated Scots here, but they really deserve to be mentioned if you are looking for decent nights out drinking.

Hi Paul from USA, Before I list a Few Pubs I think you will like,I would like to mention some great beers my husband and I had in New York from the following pubs,McSoreley's, all the Heartland Brew Pubs,The Waterfront and The Gingerman,wish we were there now but we will have to wait until we return in April.
First Bath: try these, Green Tree, Bell Inn, The Salamander, Old Green Tree and The Coeur de Lion
Brighton In Esat Sussex is a seaside town with loads of sightseeing and pubs, Our favourite is the Evening Star (be careful of the APA if it is on, it's great!)
you could also try The Basketmakers Arms but as there is 235 pubs in and around there is plenty to visit.
Salisbury is another good place to visit with The Wyndham Arms,Village Free Houseand The Haunch of Venison.
A visit to England is not complete without a visit to the The Blue Anchor in Helston,Cornwall, This is a classic 500 year old untouched pub that brews its own beer.Hope this has been of help,if you need more info on pubs in this country

Well I used to drink at the Salamander back when I lived there, although looking at your picture on the site it looks like it now belongs to Bath brewery, I like all their pubs in Bristol so sounds good, The Bell is a fantastic pub used to go there many times and play the table footie out back, used to be one of the very few pubs you could find a bar billiards table in as well, although I never knew the rules. I think both the Coeur de Lion and Old Green Tree have arrived since I left, still I have somewhere to try when I go back and catch up with old friends.
Just as a warning to any forum users, we will not delete email addresses, but I heavily advise against posting them, you will find your viagra mail goes through the roof as automated systems trawl forums to get emails to send their spam to, the forum has a private message system (click on a persons name to send them a pm, and your pm's show at the top under your name) that allows you to send personal details a bit more safely.

Thank you for the suggestions so far: Bath, Brighton, Salisbury, Helston. I checked out each of these cities on the net and think they offer a lot of sightseeing and traditional pubs...
One thing I can see already is that I really need to focus a 6 day trip to just one part of UK and not try to do everything and spend all my time in a train. Maybe just focus on London and south-western UK.
I also checked out some guided tours of UK pub crawls to borrow ideas from their itinerary, and found a guide-book called 'Real Ale Pub Guide' that I might get for some additional suggestions. Thanks again..... Paul
Paul, You need to purchase THE GOOD BEER GUIDE from any good book shop (W H Smiths,Waterstones) price £15 approx. This will guide you through the whole of UK now and in the future should you come back to UK ,as very few pubs change (or we hope not) LIZ
Just wanted to update .. I have booked my vacation for May 10-18 2008. It will be a Countrywide Pub Crawl in Ireland! I will make it to England in 2009 (or maybe for a short trip later in 2008 to do a London-only pub crawl :-). Thanks again! Paul
WOW. What a great time in Ireland. Completed 65 pubs during the course of my trip. Hit many well-known pubs and a few of the remaining traditional, local spots as well in Dublin, Galway and Killarney. Killarney is by far the easiest to hit the most number of pubs in the shortest amount of time .... and they have a lot of character. Great brews .... Guinness, Murphey's Stout, Beamish ... and really enjoyed Kilkenny. Extremely friendly people and some interesting stories in the pubs. Give lots of eye contact to the server and patrons at the bar, say 'hello' when you first walk in to the pub and you will be treated well ... my advice to you! Planning to do a London pub crawl this fall / winter 2008.
