Evening Dave. Hope you chaps had a good time up in Hull. As an Oxfordshire native, I'd be rude of me not to make an appearance and put some faces to usernames. July's looking good for me, so will work around the consensus if you can accommodate a 'newbie'. Cheers, KK.
Just got in the door back from Hull, bring it on, Oxford in July.
p.s all newbies welcome.
I couldn't make Saturday July 2nd but all other Saturdays around that time would be fine.
Time to bump this as we need a date fixed for those who want to get mega-advance tickets. Reading above, the 2nd isn't preferred - how about 9/16/23?
Also, have been thinking about a route/list
Meet point:
The Four Candles (JD Wetherspoon) (53 George Street, OX1 2BE)
then to
Beerd Oxford (7 George Street, OX1 2AT)
The Eagle & Child (49 St Giles, OX1 3LU)
Now potentially we can add some shoe leather and do
The Gardeners Arms (39 Plantation Road, OX2 6JE)
The Rose & Crown (14 North Parade Avenue, OX2 6LX)
then back to (or just go straight from the E&C) to
Lamb & Flag (12 St. Giles, OX1 3JS)
White Horse (52 Broad Street, OX1 3BB) - a small place, so may be a squeeze!
The Kings Arms (40 Holywell Street, OX1 3SB)
Turf Tavern (5 Bath Place, OX1 3SU)
The Bear (6 Alfred Street, OX1 4EH)
St Aldates Tavern (108 St Aldates, OX1 1BU)
JOKER The Chequers (131 High Street, OX1 4DH)
JOKER The Crown (59A Cornmarket Street, OX1 3HB)
The Royal Blenheim (13 St Ebbes Street, OX1 1PT)
JOKER: The Swan & Castle (JD Wetherspoon) (Castle Street, OX1 1AY)
End point/station pub
The Kite (69 Mill Street, OX2 0AL)
Thoughts?
2nd isn't suitable for me either, but the rest are fine and don't mind Fridays or Saturdays.
So, how are we looking now? We can only do Sat 2nd or Fri 1st, Fri 15th or Fri 22nd. X
Can do any Sat in July as long as there's a bit of notice.
I'd normally go for a Friday (and would prefer the 22nd to the 15th), but I've just had a quick look at train fares. Saturday 2nd is quite substantially cheaper - there may be more favourable options such as splitting my journey in Birmingham that I haven't explored yet, but at the moment I'm leaning towards Saturday 2nd (with apologies to Nev).
Some people were quite vociferous about doing this on a Saturday - have we heard from them yet on this thread?
I don't know if you're referring to me but I won't be there whatever the outcome. I've got a load,of trips already planned for July and to be honest I don't regard Oxford as a destination place . Even in the Morrells and Morland days I didn't really rate it. I've got cheap rail tickets for June to visit the Spoons but I'm not really bothered about Nicholson's, Young's, Brakspear or Fuller's pubs, in fact I'd rather not go to them at all. As it's Oxford I'm expecting to be ripped off right left and centre and will take some CAMRA vouchers for the Spoons.
I have always prefered Saturdays, one because its easier for me workwise(I understand its the opposite for you Will) ,and secondly its normally a lot cheaper travelwise although in this case its a relatively cheap trip for me with no need of advanced tickets.
Sorry Ray!
Actually, there's nothing to stop you organising a poll and getting the majority of people to support the "not the 2nd" option. That will make it easier for me to decide not to come. (I'm beginning to have some sympathy for Aqualung's thoughts about whether Oxford is really a destination, pub-wise.)
Selecting a date is always tricky and there doesn't seem a date which suits all.
Reading back through the thread ,the options seem to me to be
Saturday 2nd July
Friday 15th July
Friday 22nd July
For those people who would like to do Oxford, should we poll on just these dates ,or should a wider list of both Friday and Saturday dates in July be on a poll ?
There should be a wider list and if possible accommodate everyone, a tall order I know, I can be flexible and will do a Friday if necessary, but I think Saturday options should always be considered and they may possibly encourage new attendees, which must be a good thing.
Despite voting for 2/7/16 I can no longer do this Saturday or the preceding Friday, still flexible with all other dates but still preferring a Saturday , although at the end of the day we need to accommodate as many as possible. The sooner the date is nailed it can be booked off for those that need to.
Only seven people voted. Does this mean that others are indifferent as to which day is chosen because they will be coming anyway, or are they just so unlikely to come they couldn't be bothered to vote? I guess we'll never know (until only six of us turn up on the 22nd July).
Arriving 12:14, or if I miss my connection at Birmingham, 12:40. Departing 19:39. Two and three-quarter hours each way! I'm sure the company will be top notch, hope the pubs are too!
Am sure all 4 of us will have a good day out :D
OK, I can easily skip the 'Spoons, especially as there's a fair chance I'll be on the later train. But if there's one thing I can't stand, it's a pub that prices its beers in 2/3rds of a pint. Is it ok if I bring along my "Johnson machine gun and a carload of exploding balls". Or should I just calm down a little? (Thinks: Half is three-quarters of two-thirds, so just take a quarter off the display price and that's how much a half costs. Simple.)
Yes, looks interesting - thanks for putting it together - though some of the reviews are getting a little old. Come on, Quinno, get those skates on!
Assuming I don't get arrested after Beerd, and avoiding the two 'Spoons, that leaves me with 14 pubs. Not exactly a Winfield, but certainly a bit of a challenge to my ancient liver. (Those who like their 'Spoons but prefer to conserve shoe leather will be looking at 13, unless they duck all the jokers, which leaves a modest 10.)
I agree with Nev that the diversion into Jericho looks like a good idea. As a near-stranger to Oxford, what might also interest me would be any other out-of-the-way-locals as an alternative to what may turn out to be busy-tourist-honey-pots on a sunny July afternoon (for example this and this).
Anyone?
Looks good. Crown, Swan & Castle and Kite are pubs we haven't done before, and not promising anything as we are off to Barnard Castle on 23rd, but may come to join in a few of the town ones.
I May be up for this one..
Will confirm after the weekend

bollax.Just found some cheap tickets for sat 23rd then just double checked the date to find its a Friday crawl.Maybe I should have voted. Enjoy.
What time are we meeting?
[QUOTE=Strongers;81883]I think around midday in the Four Candles.
Thats perfect,I arrive at 11.49.
Forgot to reply, I'm in for this one and we have a hotel booked out in Iffley that we have used before..
Hope to be dropped off in Oxford for lunchtime and then the misses will go shopping whilst we go drinking..
However our usual plan of walking back down the Thames to the Hotel stopping off at the Isis Farmhouse may not be a smart way of finishing the day this time round
