Has anyone else noticed that the hugely inferior pub review site Beer In The Evening has had no postings since just before midnight on Wednesday?
Looks like it is having a make-over to me.
Hadn't noticed but just had a look and seems so,so I posted a random but true comment on the Gunmakers ,Clerkenwell (BITE name picasso09) and it comes up on the pub page but not on the home page or Live page, a bit of a blip methinks, I wonder when they will notice.
I wonder if they know that the Old Shades photo is that of the Market Porter! Perhaps I should inform them as I wouldn't want them to think their database is anything less than up to date or misleading.
Yeah it is interesting. I'll keep a watchful eye on the situation. I don't understand how BITE adverts still come up even with a pop up blocker!
If you're running Win7 or Vista with Internet Explorer then you should be able to stop pop-ups from the site.
If you are using XP then I believe Firefox allows you to stop ads on a specific site.
I feel slightly embarassed about raising this thread now as BITE is completely rubbish in so many ways, er, actually in every respect to be honest. The make-over is definitely in the Young's style.
No need to be embarassed - most of us started out life on the BITE forum (no longer in existance) and migrated over here due to the lack of discipline and the overrunning of the forum by trolls. The moderators attitude was to bar anyone who raised their head over the parapet and took on the trolls.
The overall lack of interest by the site management filters through to every level.
Thanks to Conrad and Dave this site is so much better - cheers guys!
There used to be a thread on this somewhere on this site where we reported the trolling abuse to remind ourselves what we were missing, but interest in BITE diminished over time and so did the thread...
I see their "Featured Pub Chain" is Wetherspoons with the bold claim that 602 are currently listed on the site. Only 162 short at the last count!
I had an e-mail from them a few weeks back informing me that the pub that I had requested to be added had been........22 months after I requested it!
Is this a record?
It is odd. I'm subscribed to emails about the pubs I followed on it. About once every three weeks or so I get a little flurry of five or six about the same pub. Last week it was the Royal Oak in Rusper. A couple of weeks before that it was the Market Hotel in Reigate. Some time before that the Edgar Wallace near the Law Courts. No rhyme or reason to it considering I'm subscribed to hundreds.
He did file accounts a few weeks ago though the pic in this piece about zombie businesses is appropriate.
I last entered something on BITE in 2010, and in view of this thread I had a mosey round it. I did get an e-mail last week that someone has been to a pub I had reviewed but I just deleted it., I am still down as a member and found all my stuff on there still.
I stopped recording on there when I found I preferred this site and couldn't be bothered to keep updating two sites.
After more than a week it is still stuck on the 7th/8th November, although it seems that posts are getting through.
What makes me laugh most about this is that a year or two back I made a post following a critical post of the site's inability to keep it updated that went along the lines of the site being rubbish as they never updated any details and were only interested in flogging useless Premium pub membership to gullible landlords/managers who didn't know any better.
As a result all my posts were deleted and that particulat username was deleted. Quite obviously this alone has caused the rapid decline of the site!
Was that just on the forum Aqualung, I'd dearly love to find a way of getting my reviews taken off there?
No, I never really got into the forums, try making some accusations along the lines that certain regional breweries have a policy of filtering slops back into the barrels, do an unjustified PintGlassPaddy style attack on a pub of your choice and then after a few weeks slag the site off as vehemently as you possibly can! That should work.
I assume that requesting they be removed got the same response as any other query with the site that didn't involve legal action against the site.
i couldn't remove my reviews but did change my settings so they show as being posted by anonymous
The site still seems to be stuck on the 7th/8th of November. I have picked up on a review for the Birkbeck Tavern from the 23rd of November.
I wonder if part of the makeover is deliberately not displaying the latest pub reviews. If that is the case then the site is destined to go down the toilet. I think that seeing the latest remarks about the pubs is the most essential part of an online pub guide.
I was banned so unfortunately I don’t have that option. I decided to distance myself from BITE by changing my review name on here.
The front page stopped updating a few times when I used to post over there and it was soon sorted when someone highlighted the issue via the forum. It’s either an oversight as the coordinator is too busy to care and it will be sorted in time or BITE has turned into a headless beast that will fade away.
I’m thinking that it will be sorted sooner or later, unfortunately.
Unscientific analysis, but when I used to type BITE into google it came up as the third hit. In the last few weeks it has dropped to fifth.
This site is run from the same office and clearly has similar difficulties keeping up to date.
I assume that the original creators of these sites have sold them on to some large web hosting site who have no interest whatsoever in the upkeep of them.
Why does this make me think of Ridleys/Greed Kerching, K&B/Badger, Hardy & Hanson/Greed Kerching, Morlands/Greed Kerching etc etc etc?
It's been raised on their Facebook page. So looks like they just can't be arsed. Good news for us :)
The Turrf Tavern in Oxford is now displayed as Pub of the Day for 28-11-2012 and there are no current posts at all!!
Yes, the live feed of comments has now been removed after being stuck on the 7th November for ages.
The Turf Tavern is still the Pub of the Day for the 28th of November and there are no current posts.
I have had no posts to "my pubs" since the 5th of December. I noticed tonight that there are three pages of recommendations here including some names that I don't recognise as the usual suspects. It looks like Bye Bye Bite to me!
But the annoyingly useless and stupidly named site keeps on coming up in the first few hits on Google! On the few occasions I have used the site I have been frustrated by the unfriendly layout, the hard to find and badly presented photos and the lack of up to date reviews.
Pubs Galore is so much better: it presents pubs in an attractive way, it invites contributions, the maps and photos are helpful and the way users can find out about contributors and join in the friendly discussions on the forums makes this quite clearly the best pubs site. And it's got a great name - who could fail to respond to the sound of the word "galore"?
Good bye BITE.
