With the date settled (Friday 15th October) the next task is to work out which pubs are worthy of a visit on this anniversary crawl.Let the debate begin.....................
I suppose The Bartons Arms is too far out to include?
I did this a few years ago with the guys from the Beer & Pubs Forum. There are buses that get you there pretty quickly, and back again. I left the rest of the group at the Woodman, walked to Corporation Street to catch a bus, and arrived at the Bartons Arms 25 minutes after leaving the Woodman. I rejoined the group at the (now sadly demolished) Eagle & Tun 15 minutes after leaving the Bartons Arms.
Not long until my Oyster60 card for free (for a small one-off payment) travel in the capital, and my senior railcard will be not far behind, whoop-whoop!!
Re the 10/11 year anniversary, I did wonder whether a fellow-pedant may raise the issue but, for heaven's sake Will, it's not like an apostrophe error or suchlike!!
I still have the jacket... and it was 10 years old then
I couldn't convince my good lady of another weekend in Brum (done it for two years before the pandemic for the Yonex all England Badminton) or the virtues of the Bull Ring, especially as shes shopped it before and now it is John Lewis lite, so will be making a day of it by train..
Have got the cheep advanced tickets for the 10.15AM out of Euston to New Street and the 20.14pm back out of BNS if any of the London crowd want to sync up travel arrangements..
I think that's what the Pubs Galore crowd were doing in 2010, under Gill's tutelage. However, 11 years later there are probably enough of us with free bus passes to scupper this idea. And plucking four random passengers from the queue to form an alliance requires you to then stay together all day. Any takers?
Don't all buses take card payments these days? Anyway, buying a Plus Bus ticket when you get your trains sorted is probably the cheapest way.
Can I suggest we visit The Bartons Arms reasonably early in the crawl while we are relatively sober otherwise it will be like trying to herd cats as the day progresses and it would be a shame for anyone who hasn't been there to miss out.We also need local knowledge about where exactly in the city centre to catch said bus. This might then define the crawl meeting place (traditional 'spoons KO anybody ?) and maybe some of the initial crawl targets.
Enjoy the day! A shame I will miss it.
For info on the Bartons Arms discussion, here is the bus gen; The buses are National Express West Midlands 33/51 to Walsall/Pheasey from Lower Bull Street/High Street stop BS16 (down the road from the Peaky Blinder bar to see on a map). They jointly run every 5 mins, journey time about 7 mins to Burlington Street, 2 mins from the pub.
Note that the starting point might be subject to change due to ongoing tram extension works (needs checking nearer the time).
The current fare appears to be £2.40 single, £4 day ticket, £7 group day ticket for up to 5 people. Twerly passes valid after 09.30. Mobile app tickets available and cash & contactless accepted on the bus.
I'm sure you will al have a great day but I am away that week celebrating my 50th birthday.:cheers:
Which pubs were visited on the original crawl 10 years ago? Be interesting to see if they are all still open!
You can read all about it here: http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showt...ber-Birmingham. And you had to miss the original crawl, too (page 12, #120). See #214 on page 22 for Conrad's recollections of the pubs visited.
Hope you enjoy your birthday celebrations!
Aarggh! I now realise this follows my visit to pubs and beer-fest in Nottingham 14th, and 15th is traditional 'de-brief' day.
Too old and weak to make Brum as well, so it is with deep regret that I shall be unable to make the anniversary photo (be it 10th or 11th, Will!), properly gutted!
I look forward to belatedly enjoying the day vicariously, via the prize-writing of our inimitable band...
Just to get the ball rolling on which pubs might await us:
There is a very tight cluster of city centre pubs worth considering possibly both before and after visiting the Bartons Arms*
Briar Rose* . If there is demand for breakfast and the traditional 'spoons PuG start
Head of Steam
Wellington*
Old Joint Stock*
Colmore
Pure Craft
Post Office Vaults
I've never visited the Jewellery Quarter ,so maybe others could suggest any names worth considering. There would then be an interesting canalside walk :o from there to a bit of an outlier
Craven Arms
But it is on the way (with more walking) to Digbeth for
Lamp Tavern *
Spotted Dog
Anchor * .... and within reasonable striking distance of the railway stations.
* Pubs that were visited by the 2010 crawl.
The Jewellers Arms in the Jewellery Quarter is a Black Country Ales pub which is worth a visit. Burning Soul Taproom and Rock & Roll Brewhouse are nearby but the opening hours are not too good on a Friday. 3pm and 5pm if memory serves.
If you are walking the canal to the Craven Arms you have the Tap & Spile and the Canalside Cafe en route.
If you are moving from the City centre to the Jewellery Quarter it is one stop on the train from Snow Hill - right by the The Old Contemptibles.
A daytripper costs £6.90 and covers all trains, trams and buses.
My train tickets are booked, arrive 11.49, depart 20.04.
I arrive at New Street at 11.25 :drinkup::drinkup: and depart 21.10 :nishelypished:
Hello gang, hope ye're all grand, I had an email from the little wan telling me about this, I'm rest day the Saturday FFS but I'm working on getting the Friday instead/as well.
I will say the Bull in Price St (Gunmakers district) is now being run by Nigel from the Wellington, I don't know is it Black Country or just him but it is having very good reports from respectable correspondents. It's 5 minutes walk from where the 7 bus stops on the way back from the Bartons at Lower Loveday St. https://maps.app.goo.gl/TUG1XLBh6wUYNkmt8
Good idea! And there's the Gunmakers Arms, brewery tap for Two Towers brewery, just around the corner from the Bull on Price Street. So that's three pubs sorted already.
Yes, that's better also because the 33 & 51 alternate from the same stop, each running every 10 mins but five minutes apart from each other, whereas the 7, from a different bus stop around the corner, is every 10 minutes with no alternative if you've just missed one.
Myself and Tony are declared runners, unfortunately no Evil Gazebo (Richard) of 2010, he has other commitments.
