National Express (http://www.nationalexpresseastanglia.com/seat-sale) are offering a bunch of £5 tickets for a limited period.Small print includes "Book between 3rd and 20th January 2012 inclusive, for travel from 21st January and 14th April 2012".

Any interest? Never been myself, but I believe that there's a fair number of decent pubs. This is more interesting to London and South-East based PuGgers: I'm not sure that you'd be able to get these tickets on cross-country routes (and Norwich is a heck of a long way from anywhere!).

Like you, never been to Norwich but it does look good on the ale and pub front.I would be interested in a trip up there and that offer by NXEA does look very good.

High on my target list, and remiss of me not to mention it as a 2012 mission.
My list of must-do pubs numbers 17, all worthy of at least one joker; I'd need a few days there, methinks, but my schedule makes it unlikely to be this early.

We did Norwich about 3 years in a row staying in the caravan for a week when the beer festival was on in October (beautiful venue in an old church) , and always enjoyed the afternoons when the fest closed to have a wander round the pubs in Norwich, or bus out to Geldeston, Beccles, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft to name a few places to check out GBG pubs there. Haven't been for a couple of years now, but looks like the pubs have gone from strength to strength from what I have read elsewhere. Don't think any visitors would be disappointed.

I've done a couple of pubs in Norwich (including the excellent Fat Cat) but not had an extensive pub visit. I quite fancy it but will need to look at the logistics. I was hoping to combine a Spurs away trip with a weekend session to kill the proverbial brace of birds but the match was scheduled for Boxing Day so I steered clear. Sod's law is that they then changed it to the following day for TV and I could have done something around the new date if I had cottened on in time. Maybe next seson.

Well, I went ahead with it, and booked a return for Friday 30th March. The offer runs for a few more days, if anyone's interested. Some of the Saturdays seem to be beset with engineering works, hence the Friday trip.

If anyone thinks that CAMRA is a waste of space just look at Norwich. "Back in the day" when I knew that Fine City, there were only two known outlets for real ale-The Wildman in Bedford hill, selling Tolly Cobbold, and The Maid's Head Hotel in Tombland , selling Adnams on gravity, though that was really a special occasion venue. As for the rest, wall to wall Grotneys, leavened with the occasional Courage or Whitbread pub. It was grand when the Grotney's draymen went on strike, as enterprising landlords would put a pin of Greene King on the bar.
You youngsters-don't know yer born...

I believe the actual argument from the blogosphere is that CAMRA has had its day and is now pointless because "cask is saved - rejoice" and that CAMRA refuses to move with the times and support "Craft Beer" or even "Craft Keg".

This is usually heard from, amongst others, disaffected micro brewers who don't think they're getting enough free advertising from CAMRA or certain brewers who find it useful from a marketing angle to be anti-CAMRA. Some bloggers often view CAMRA as some kind of official body that has the power to regulate the production and sale of beer in the UK, rather than a volunteer organisation of almost 135,000 piss artists, most of whom are, perhaps, in it for the JDW vouchers and free entry to beer festivals.

Being an old git I too remember the bad old days of a rising sea of keg and little or no choice (the Norfolk beer desert being the prime example) so I am thankful for CAMRA's past victories and look forward to new ones hopefully on the neo-pro and beer tax fronts.

Trainman sent me a list of 17 and I've added a few to it. Need to sit down tomorrow and do a bit of filtering!

And how is that list looking, Roger? How close to the 2012 target of 366 new pubs do you think you will have reached by 8.00 on Friday?

I've had a quick look myself and would be interested in:
The Duke of Wellington (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubmap/28516/) (unless too far)
Fat Cat (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/28468/)'s a possible
Cottage (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/28439/) (10 ales on) sounds good
Kett's Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/28525/) (Norwich Bear brewery tap)
King's Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/57300/) (Bateman's) although seems more southerly than the others

Actually, the more I investigate, the more I seem to find! Any of these on Trainman's list? Any other recommendations from anyone? I see that Alan Winfield has posted a crawl, although even Roger may find the scope a little daunting!

The city does see to be a little light on coverage here. Whether I'll be in any position to put that right after the event, I wouldn't like to say (although I think I know how things are likely to go).

Any of these on Trainman's list?

Yes, all except Cottage, probably because my list has only had minor tweakage since creation in '07(!), & Cottage seems to have become Mauldons since then, (I've been to t'other in Sudbury).
Don't know how many you'll have time for, but Trafford Arms (not a name I find easy to recommend!!), Kings Head (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/pubs/8681054/Norfolk-pub-guide-The-Kings-Head-Norwich.html), Coach & Horses, brewpub & close to station (http://www.thecoachthorperoad.co.uk/index.html), seem to be ones to include.

Some of mine were further out, though the centre is a little way from the station so the extra distance may not be excessive, I haven't really mapped it out. I'll send you my list, you may find more of a chink in your schedule (than Roger!) for perusal...

Looks like Trafford and (this) Coach&Horses not listed on PuG, so maybe 'must-visits' to add profile?

If CAMRA want to expand their area of influence, I would have thought it would make sense to support other good beer - regardless of dispense method - rather than start supporting ciders, perries or antiquated pubs that no-one cares about. They are stuck in the 1970s and need to move with the times. Some of the best beers I've had this year have been keg, 5AM Saint, Punk IPA and Ruination IPA. Anyone under 35 can go to Foley's or Port Street Beer House or any of the Taps and drink cask or keg, they really don't mind so long as it is good beer. CAMRA's head-in-the-sand attitude towards expanding their beer remit despite being willing to expand it for apple or pear based drinks shows they are an organisation fighting yesterday's cause rather than assessing the situation as it is now and responding. We've moved on from the 1970s even if CAMRA hasn't.

People do visit normal pubs, you happen to live in the centre of a large city that has got a few of these over priced craft bars.

If you went to a normal town or village you would see that the pubs there do still attract customers drinking normal boring brown beers.

Please read my review of Brewdogs new Nottingham pub i dont know if this is a craft pub but i do know that i was charged a lot for a drink,i may have said the wrong price it could have been more expensive at £1.75 for a third of a pint,i got confused about this when i was picking myself up from the floor.

That would be because a member proposed it should be promoted in a motion at a previous annual conference and that motion was passed so becoming CAMRA policy.

Two motions regarding "craft" stuff will be debated at the forthcoming conference in April. Tandleman has blogged about it here (http://tandlemanbeerblog.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/vision-and-courage-required.html). Personally I expect them to be defeated purely on the grounds of "craft" being a meaningless term in a UK context. There's endless tedious drivel about this in the blogosphere.

Aren't all the conferences and meetings midweek? So generally count against the younger members who are likely to be working or looking after family when these decisions are taken. If I have a day off the last thing I want to be doing is sitting in a stuffy room debating about what is real ale. "Craft" is only meaningless if you believe there is no way to discriminate between good and bad beer.

Well, not that close, but possibly convenient for you, I believe the Market Porter has an early start. Then there's Smithfields Market - say, 15 minutes walk. Don't know if Spitalfields would justify an early opener these days.

"Craft" is only meaningless if you believe there is no way to discriminate between good and bad beer.

Does that mean the Spinko definition of "Craft" is any good beer? As a number of bloggers have said "Craft" usually means "Beer I like from brewers I like", all very nice but just a bit woolly for any practical application.

Done my homework. Got a list of 15 but not intending to do them all - will generally fall in line with whatever els wants although I have a few Dead Certs that I'm sure will be on everyone elses list as well (although I have done the Fat Cat so may miss that one due to the trek if it means I can fit in another couple). I will want to have a wander round as well (Castle/Cathedral etc) so may break the day into 3 - Pubs/Sightseeing/Pubs. I can't remember whether they are reserved seats on the train so not sure where when to meet up. An excellent day in Norwich on Friday with RP Adam and Paul of Horsham. First met RPA at the Hamilton Hall for a pre-journey ‘Spoons Fest pint before boarding the train where PoH had grabbed a table. We compared our 15 strong pub lists and found out that very few crossed over so an interesting crawl was on the cards.

Having upset most of the quiet carriage we arrived at 11.30 and headed straight for the Coach & Horses, home of the Chalk Hill Brewery where we sampled not just the beers but had an impromptu tour of the brewery (it didn’t take long!).

Next stop was the Ketts Tavern (via a couple of closed pubs along the way that need PG removal although RPA grabbed a couple of snaps for posterity). The Ketts had a good selection iof Norwich Bear beers, RPA & I going for the Classic whilst PoH went for a Pooh!

Along the ring road to the Cottage where we found a good selection of regular, guest and local beers as well as a sizeable but friendly hound blocking the doorway. A dose of Ole Slewfoot Orange Blossom Special for me here.

The Kings Head was next with another hefty ale selection, a Winter’s KHB being my preferred choice. PoH indulged in some experimental silhouette photography that seemed to impress the locals.

With hunger pains setting in we just happened to be walking past the Glasshouse ‘Spoons so a few budget burgers and another festival ale (unusually for ‘Spoons, racked up on stillage away from the bar) before having a wander around the Cathedral grounds and the Castle (which was unfortunately shut by the time we got there. We managed to lose RPA somewhere along the way but PoH and I went in a fruitless search for the Walnut Tree Shades before a quick phone call revealed that RPA had absconded to the Bell for a sneaky pint so an emergency ‘Spoons festival pint no 3 of the day was shifted as we regrouped.

After a prolonged search we finally located the Walnut Tree Shades, not the best beer selection of the day but the Humpty Dumpty Little Sharpie kept me going for half an hour.

RPA had a train to catch so departed leaving PoH and I to stagger along to the Champion where another 9 ales (and a cider) confronted us along with the local DJ who seemed to have better taste in beer than music. After an Oldershaw Heavenly Blond it was decided to risk no more than 1 more pub in the allotted time so we chose 2 pubs for the price of 1 in the Gardeners Arms a.k.a. the Murderers. Since the pub has 2 identities I though it reasonable to have 2 pints, the Maulden Cickoo and their own Murderers Ale.

Slightly worse for wear we managed to get the scheduled train before finally arriving back at Liverpool Street at around something o’clock.

Between us we had around 25 pubs on our list from which we managed 9 so I think there is plenty of scope for a return visit, or 2.

CAMRA Members Online Panel – Survey Results 1

Thank you to the 2,150 members of the Online Panel that completed the first survey that was issued at the end of January.

There were some very interesting findings from this survey that are helping us to create a new membership benefits package that will be launched later in the year and also helping us decide on what merchandise to produce.

Here are some top line results from the survey:

92% stressed they would like the £20’s worth of JD Wetherspoon real ale vouchers to continue as part of the membership

75% of the panel said they would like Brewery Excursions included as a membership benefit

I have an abundance of ammual leave to use up so I'm up for another Fri day out if anyone else is. There was plenty we missed out on last time round, plenty worth returning to and this time we'll might even get to the Castle when it's open!

Bumping this one to bring Greater Anglia's £8 promotion (http://www.greateranglia.co.uk/tickets-fares/discounts/extra-8-advance-tickets) to the attention of London and South-East based pub-reviewers.
Between 6th August and 11th November, there will be an extra 8,800 £8 one way seats available each week for one way for Advance Purchase routes on the Norwich to London Intercity service.

I just checked for, say, 23Nov and the £8 ew option is still available then (beyond the original parameters above).
Also note the availability of groupsave (4-4-2) which would bring an open rtn for a group of 4 down to £23pp. Unfortunately groupsave doesn't seem to apply to the £8 tkts!

I had a look at the 16th and the £8 options were there (ie £16 return). I don't actually have many Fridays available this side of Xmas!

Daughter's student house next year is close to the Fat Cat!

Us dads are certainly bringing our daughters up in the proper manner.

My daughter did'nt bother with Uni,by my son did,he went to Birmingham University, first staying in Selly Oak,then Harbourne,no pubs in these areas match up to those i have been to in Norwich or Southsea.

Clever lad, but sadly poor pubs where he stayed
