A couple of people have been asking for a few stats on how 2011 went on the site, so here goes.

There are now 63,353 pubs on the site, of which 53,787 are listed as open. Of the 53,787 open pubs we have reviews of 20,972 and photos of 37,268.

During 2011 we had 11,978 reviews of 9,724 different pubs written by 1,295 reviewers. There were 46,474 Photos of 17,659 pubs were submitted by 468 different photographers.

The number of reviews was quite a bit less than the 17,116 in 2010, but not surprising as there were a lot being migrated from BITE during 2010.

Anyway, here are all the raw stats for 2011 against previous years so you can see exactly how things have been going.

Dave ,thanks a lot for compiling these stats. To have 39% of the currently open pubs with a review sounds like a real improvement and to have 69% photographed is very impressive indeed.

It's nice to see all the stats steadily going up. Here's to another industrious year of pub hunting!

Cheers for the stats - it's great to see year-on-year improvement and (2010 excepted) a doubling of the reviews.

One stat that stands out is the big increase in the number of map points corrected. When we can't get out are we still sitting at home finding the exact location of pubs on Google Streetview and plonking a cross on their roof on PG? ;)

Another is the alarming number of pubs closed. However, is that because we are being more assiduous with our tidy-ups, are we adding more suggestions of closed pubs, or are we just getting about more? It's also difficult (I would imagine) to differentiate between the suggested pubs which are new businesses (eg JDWs and others in premises which weren't previously pubs), pubs which have always been there but have been missed before and new businesses in old licensed premises.

But thanks, Admins, for the work you've done in producing these figures.

I suspect the answer, from my submissions in this area, lies somewhere inbetween those three.

I've added a few that have been closed for years and also been to areas that haven't been covered and found many pubs that have long gone.
Reviewers like Tris C have added loads of closed pubs which I've found very interesting as many are around my old manor.

Yes good figurers but this one is Rather depressing nearly 2000 more Pubs were marked closed than marked as opened.

True - but it might not be quite as bad as it appears. As Strongers said, there are people who are adding pubs that have been closed for many years (nothing wrong with that I hasten to add); and I suspect that PUG users generally are being a bit more assiduous in their efforts. So, to state the obvious, pubs being marked as closed last year isn't the same thing as pubs closing last year. Still not a good trend though.

And there's double counting to consider - I can account for some which have closed and opened again and even a couple which have opened and closed twice over the last couple of years. And I guess I am as guilty as anyone of driving past a pub, noting the skips outside then requesting it marked "closed - refurbishment", then not passing that way for ages to discover whether it's back as a pub or become flats or a restaurant.

Interesting that we have added 3,859 pubs to the site. I wonder how many of these are new ventures rather than pubs that have been lurking around for years in some kind of Lost World scenario and how many more are out there awaiting discovery.

I suspect that there are loads lurking around in Northern Ireland and some of the more remote areas of Scotland.

I added a few last year even though we only went to Belfast, which is by far the best covered of all the NI towns & cities.

We might have to try Derry next time.

Could be hundreds especially in more rural counties , i keep uncovering new ones in Worcestershire , and Herefordshire looks pretty sparse compared with its neighbours , there must be loads in some towns , i deliver to Winsford and around half the pubs were not listed , how many other towns have only got a 50% listing

Keep on searching:D

Rural Wales is another area where pubs have been and still are missing. Quite a few towns have had several pubs missing including ones that have been in national guides for a few years.

London, Kent and Sussex seem to be very well covered as I rarely find a new pub these days.

I seldom seem to find an unknown (proper) "pub" nowadays, but frequently come across new bars, or other establishments which ought to qualify that have sprung up. Of course they often disappear as quickly, which adds to the closure numbers.
