A New Year dawns and hopefully lots of new pubs to visit.

I actually have two here and it's only 10 January! The Crown Inn, Beeston, Nottingham, and equally as impressive is The Shakespeare's Head, Leicester. Enjoying the darts at the minute!

While I had my beer of this week there, my pub of the month will not be Stalybridge Buffet Bar. Refused me service at 10:30am, allowed a hen party to come in with contraband 5 minutes later and served them at 10:55am. They should have been kicked out for their shrieking.

It's probably going to be North Bar..but I think they need to do more American inspired beer rather than European stuff. Sour beers do not work.

Called in Common (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/65133/) again after the Winter Ales fest and they really are trying hard and now have 2 changing guests on the bar having ditched the Flowers Original.

No doubt they're benefitting from the success of Port Street Beer House (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/72631/) on the beer front as Common is their sister bar.

Port Street also put themselves in the frame after my latest visit last week.

My pub of the month will be Post Office Vaults in Birmingham as it is an exciting new venue and is doing great things for anyone who enjoys beers from Belgium as well as having a range of real ales and ciders. On my way back for another visit today.

Places I've enjoyed this month have been The Anchor in Digbeth, Whitefriars in Coventry, Foley's and North Bar in Leeds, and The Nags Head in Reading.

I think Whitefriars edges it, and I'd recommend having a bite to eat there too. Great chips..

Pub visits have been rather limited this month, but I enjoyed a session on Wednsday in Mr Foley's, Leeds, so that can be my POTM.

Old Bell & Crown (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/59542/)

For me it has to be this one - exceptionally pleasant and worth makign a detour for.

The Plough Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/16045/) . A fine start to the year, with beers from the new Kent Brewery and my beloved Hopodaemon, together with good locally produced food.

Got around a lot of very good pubs this month. I really enjoyed the Wellington and Post Office Vaults in Birmingham, the beautiful Argyll Arms in Oxford Circus and the ever reliable Euston Tap.

Two pubs stood out from the rest though - Pretty Bricks(New Inns) (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/38903/) in Walsall and Arkwright Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/6803/) in Duckmanton, Chesterfield. Both excellent pubs that I could have happily spent the rest of my day in - if I have to pick one, the Pretty Bricks just about gets the nod.

My POTM could have been any of these, really - all excellent in their own way:

Croydon - Green Dragon
Edinburgh - Abbotsford (New Town), Bennets (Tollcross), Cloisters (Tollcross), Doric (Old Town), Holyrood 9A (Old Town)
Foxton - Bridge 61
Glasgow - Bon Accord (Charing Cross), Counting House (Central), Three Judges (Kelvinhall)

but I'll go for The Holyrood 9A (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48971/) because it was such a surprise, discovering an unreviewed bar with 20 beers on tap (albeit 16 being of the craft keg variety) having popped in on the off chance as I was passing...

The ones that stood out for me this month were the Three Horseshoes in Sidlow, and two from my Canterbury weekend: La Trappiste, a great new Belgian beer bar I was able to add to the site, and the Unicorn, which gets it on account of the beer, the atmosphere, and the bar billiards table.

My POTM could have been ...

Glasgow - Bon Accord (Charing Cross),

.

If it came to a vote I'd go with you on this one. I'd never heard of the Holyrood - definitely one to try next time I'm up in Edinburgh.

I think mine was Tapping the Admiral in Camden. http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/72375/ A super find in an area where I have done the pubs to death and ale choices are limited. Recently reopened after several years closure (it was the Trafalgar Tavern which I had never ventured into before), now has 8 ales with some interesting guests. Pleasant ambience. CAMRA discount. Reasonable Thai food. A newly discovered little nugget 5 mins walk from the Camden Lock/Market area. Will certainly make that a future destination pub when I am in the area as I quite often am.

Not many to choose from this month but, surprisingly, The Papermill (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53474/) in Apsley gets it for a warm fire and a cracking pint of Benghal Lancer.

For a long time it looked like The York in Broomhill,a great pub, would top the poll ,but right at the end of the month was my first visit to The Craft Beer Co (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23311/) and that scooped POTM.

What with winter maintenance stoppages:(,severe water shortages:eek: and now freezing conditions it looks like boating related boozing may be suspended during February ,so some effort will have to be invested to find a good candidate POTM in Feb.

That's a useful steer Roger, and along with The Southampton Arms and Pineapple makes this a good neighbourhood for drinking.:)

Despite me thououghly enjoying a night out in Port Street Beer House, Common & Odd, which I've all visited regularly, January wasn't a great month for new pubs.

So for a change I'm going to go for a complete unsung hero.

I'm the first person to review The Black Horse Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/12911/) which doesn't really surprise me.

It's a proper commumity local and even though it's only got 1 cask ale I'm going to vote it my POTM.
