It's long overdue that we had a thread where we can give a little bit of kudos to our dedicated band of pub reviewers. :notworthy:

Inspired in part by Hondo's admiration for RogerB's review of the Garrick Arms,

"the pub did hit the headlines a few years ago when ex Blue Peter presenter turned DJ Richard Bacon famously got a pasting in the bogs downstairs"

if i rated pubs that would certainly merit a bonus point ;)

it would be good to use this thread to highlight those reviews that make us laugh, cry or, more importantly, drop everything and get to the pub in question.

To get us started, how about this understaement from the recent Nottingham get together c/o Soupy:

""The service was fine and the clientele consisted of a load of studenty females that could model for England and a group of pubs galore people that could model for Wetherspoons."

:)

i think i would raise my hat to another reviewer local to myself, whose reviews are exceptional. I haven't seen him on the forum (or her!) - Ale Monster, take a bow.

I have read some great comments over the past few years and from now on will make a point of mentioning the bits that make me chuckle

One of my favourite Soup D reviews included the following comment:

"The clientele is unique. A microcosm. An agglomeration of: decent people, the best of Bedlam, the f***ing Tourette's Society and scrapings from the tank at the Sea-Life Centre"

but we still reminisce about the reviewer who didn't like Soupy's review about another place and responded with:

"I completely disagree! Lovely pub with friendly staff and the best pint of Carling for miles around"

and followed it up in her next review (since deleted by Admin) by calling him a douche bag. Recognition indeed. :)

Seems a good idea to me PSM, although I've a vague memory of this being touched on before? (Did a quick search, but couldn't find the thread.)

I was just about to write my review of the William IV in Truro, when i came upon this, from the pen of our learned Quinno...

"The food was good, though watch out for the volcanic rock dishes where they bring out a super-heated pumice stone and allow you to cook your own seafood/steak - one chap went for the steak and spilt a load of jalapeño sauce over the plate which sent a billow of tear gas-style smoke up in the air and prompted a mass evacuation of the place because we were all coughing, our throats were on fire and tears were streaming out of our eyes. One of the odder things that's ever happened to me in a pub".

Now, how do i follow that?

I would like to congratulate Pubsignman for his thorough review of The White Horse (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55773/) and especially his humourous line

There is Palace memorabilia everywhere including lots of framed shirts and signed photos and this was rather bizarrely supplemented by numerous Laurel and Hardy figurines, which, for all I know, could be a satirical swipe at Palace's current striking partnership

Even as a Palace fan I had a little laugh at that.:)

Not so much appreciation as amusement. Do you think she wanted him to leave. :D

Rather enjoyed Steve of N21 / Gann's moan about the price of Scotch eggs in the Craft Beer Co (once I'd let go the fleeting image of Anne Widdecombe.)

'much as I adore real scotch eggs, the hard boiled egg would need to have been shelled using the thighs of a virgin during the manufacturing process for me to fork out £3.50.'

Following on from Mr Adams' post (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?9416-Tragic-News) about the classic station pub Boadicea (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/68187/) being shut:

"In troubled times, there are thankfully still some certainties in this world. The sun will rise in the east and set in the west. The England football team will perform somewhere in the range between disappointing and rubbish. And idiots like me will return to the Boadicea after several years of carefully avoiding this joyless pit."

Even Quinno is prone to the occasional freudian slip:

'...this is one of those hidden gem pubs that you don't expect to exit...'

http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/24447

There seems to be something slightly odd going on with the history though, as the review thinks it's dated 30.12.09 but the history thinks it was posted five days ago. There seem to have been several like this recently.

Yeah, I have 250-odd old pubs on the 'to-do' list, many of which date from my hiatus period between sites. I still took notes though and I am now using my spares on the mass migrate tool (200-odd from Reading!) to get these done. Deciphering three-year old notes on scraps of paper, often written when tipsy, is proving to be a bit of a challenge  so some of them will be a little more short and terse than usual.

So you had a year off but didn't?

Yep - I suspected that I would end up here but wanted to see how things panned out as I didn't want a BITE Mk#2 scenario. I felt like I'd wasted a lot of time over the other side and my morale was quite low. I thought a year or so would be enough to see if the good things I'd heard about PuG were a long-term reality rather than a flash in the pan so I kept taking notes and thought that, if PuG didn't work out I'd simply write a blog for my reviews and pix instead. Happily, it's the former. This site has made big strides over the last couple of years and I think we're on the cusp of the tipping point where we start to get traffic generated by word of mouth, the fact that the quality of reviews are better and that, most importantly, the database accuracy is streets ahead. Fingers crossed....

How to make a grand entrance...

I thought I was going to be disappointed when I arrived at this pub,... as the first door I pushed was resoundly shut, and no light was showing, however I tried the corner door and it opened, but then the burglar alarm went off! Unsure what to do, I did nothing, then the landlady appeared.

Nice one from ETA made me chuckle - making a suitably apt anagram out of a pub's name

Having said all that, the welcome from the barmaid was a cheerful one - she is by far the pub's best asset. How aposite that an anagram of "The Rose and Crown" is "retards, one wench".

From this pub: Rose & Crown in Gosport (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/70079/)

But he seems to have the knack of damming with faint praise, love it

A nice few from the 'Boy from the Baum' - having popped into a couple of Wolverhampton places the other day - which i had not been in for a number of years, i notice they had been CAMRA'd - i do wish Mr C would say what he means in stead of beating about the bush!

"It actually seems to attract a clientele that find the Wetherspoons a bit posh" (the old Goose in the City)

"The barmaid finished serving a person at the other end of the bar and then went back to reading her paper. After a couple of strategic coughs she looked up and then started reading again. I thought bollocks to this and left. I suspect the beer was crap anyway. It's a desperate dive, don't go in." (New Inn)

"It's shabby on the outside and the inside isn't much better. There is no cask ale at this pub any longer, in fact on my visit they didn't even have any keg ale. The only option available was lager, so I left. This area of Wolverhampton is full of bad pubs, this isn't even one of the worst, but it is still crap. It won't be around much longer on this showing anyway and it won't be any kind of loss." (Plough & Harrow)

I utilised the Rats Castle in the late 70's when doing my apprentiship at Marconi (sadly now long gone, like most of Britains manufacturing industry), and whilst us spotty apprentices may have held fancies of certain events taking place with some of the girls from the production line, especially after the Friday lunchtime session, sadly I have to report, no such offences of this type took place in The Rats in those days...

"a central zone that consists of a kiddies ball play area, a kid's grabbing machine, a shop that was selling kids scary Dracula teeth and other such necessities for the under 8s, as well as a dance floor with accompanying DJ booth area - good to see a mullet again. For the descerning young adult there are a couple of pool tables and a punchbag machine. For someone my age, there is the exit."

:D Yep, well done Soup. The last sentence made me laugh out loud.

Unfortunately we didn’t get the booths at the front and had to sit in the conservatory at the back. But we were kept well entertained by a strange bunch all badged up on a ‘return of the ring’ Tolkien tour which gave me hope that there are bigger saddos out there than us pub tickers.

'While I was there two or three locals came in with their dog, and while they started to open their packed lunches the dog took the opportunity of a sneaky pee on the carpet.'

I do like the facility on here to edit my reviews, that was a big fault of that other place, it is easy sometimes to forget a detail or miss a typo., so I personally would not like to lose that. I wonder if it is attention seeking ie keeping it on the front page as a current review, otherwise I fail to see the point. Besides, it could easily be referred to the Report a Review page as it tells me nothing of interest or value about the pub

Soupy can bask in the glory - as I'm going through Nottingham en route to adding my own t'uppence worth 18 months too late, I came across this gem from the Olde Trip to Jerusalem:

with the fondness we have incorrectly using ‘Ye’ for ‘the’ and adding the extra ‘e’ in words to give some sort of pedigree, the old became olde – funny, why didn’t they didn’t stick an ‘e’ on the end of Trip?

ETA
18-03-2013, 07:04
Boring Answer Alert!!!!

Because 'old' is an adjective and therefore on this occasion takes the inflective 'e' as 'trip' is being treated (incorrectly in my view) as a feminine noun, whereas 'trip', as a noun, doesn't require an inflection.

I agree, the 'Ye' should read 'the'. For those who suffer from insomnia, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorn_(letter)

Mrs Soup dropped me off at the game with 10 mins to spare, in the pouring rain - i then had to catch a train around to Millom, where the digs were - i hadn't had a drink all day and didnt think i was going to get another - hence the speed - however, it isn't big and it isn't clever - but who cares! oh! the Liverpool one was a sample - he told me it was vile, and it truely was!

Having said that his review of The Windsor Castle in E5 (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/25027/) which is in a very similar vein has not stopped this as I gather it, to have become a Craft Beer type of pub. Please be aware that I'm not having a go at Sreve C's reviews here, but given that both are in trendy areas, maybe the Britannia closed as it was a modern estate pub and the Mr O'Reiily makeover would just have looked completely silly (or sillier).

Though Mr Fastard lays a nice sardonic line of his own: "The décor is classic 'spoons apart from the model of a punter trying to escape through a skylight." - perhaps a bit of decor more suited to the (much passed but never visited on Saturday) Hope Tap (JD Wetherspoon) (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/1665/)

It wasn't until I read Soupy's review that I realised that ,of course, the model was a monk retreating from the pub. From a distance all I could see were two dangling legs,I was more concerned that some poor unfortunate have given up the will to carry on.

That's my favourite pub in Bristol due to the diversity and madness that goes on in there. I actually suggested to Blackthorn that he needed to visit it to see it for what it's like. It's not a great pub for the purposes of sending people flocking to visit but what do you generally expect when it's surrounded by tower blocks and was the location for my dissertation on designing out crime/ improving the neighbourhood.

One of Peter Rydings' more eccentric reviews here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/21423/). It looks like there's been some sort of keyboard accident, perhaps prompted by the thought of Steph's behind. Am I right in thinking that "you can not stop for one" means "it's so nice here you just have to stop for another"? And is Walter Tully Soldier Footballer really a beer? Walter Tull (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Tull) appears to be real enough, but I can't find any reference to a beer named after him from a Northants brewery. Perhaps a better Googliser than me can help.

I can't beieve that on a pub review site the reviewer would get the name of the beer wrong. In Tottingham there is a Footbore team called Tottingham Hotspur. The local Redemption brewery produce a beer called Hopspur, although as the brewery is near the River Lea it is half East London in my book. I suggest a punishment of being made to drink several pints of John Smith's Smooth Crap.

Mr N17's review of http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubreviews/71556/

And then a serving area with lots of pumps dispensing expensive beer, the highlight of which is the quite wonderful beer menu above it in the style of an old Odeon cinema sign, so cluttered and disorganised that to the untrained eye, you have no idea what’s available and what it costs. And you kind of get the feeling that if you have to ask, you’re in the wrong place.
So a fairly soulless place serving fine but expensive beers, why would anyone in the area go there.
Now fortunately I know the answer to that one as I visit the nearby Spitalfields market and laugh at what they are trying to charge for the pretentious modern art crap in there, and also visit the market inside the old Trumans brewery and cry at what they are charging for the old crap that I have thrown out onto skips in recent years in there .
A Brewdog bar in Shoreditch. Yep I certainly get it.
And for the record I too had an excellent half of Dead Pony Club 3.8% costing 2.10 of my hard earned English pounds and sat there sipping it slowly to make it last as long as I humanly could.

Clientele are an eclectic mix of the lost, the misguided and the simply plastered. Atmosphere around closing time was reminiscent of a field dressing station during Napoleon's retreat from Moscow. The desperation was palpable....though hope remained in the eyes of a cheery moon-faced little chap I observed delivering a lengthy monologue about a trip to Sun City. Apparently it's not a city. My spelling isn't that great, not because I can't spell but more because of typos which I would hope this howler was.
I run my reviews into MS Word before posting to try and find spelling and grammatical errors but this one would NOT have been highlighted. The new word to me "muched" was and I wouldn't try that one in Scrabble or on Countdown.

It's nice to see John McGraw letting us know how City of London pubs really are
here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23443/)
here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23444/)
and here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23484/).
I think that he has been overly generous with the ratings.

What's a "bog beast" anyway? Doesn't sound very nice!

I think it's the same as a Swamp Donkey, hope that helps.

I did have a chuckle at this review (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/2552/)from PSM questioning where some of the local drinkers may have come from.

Had a good laugh at ROBCamra's review of The Ship Canal (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/26234/), Eccles. It's probably fair to say he doesn't sit on the fence. Rather disappointingly, the pub doesn't have a flat roof.

If I'd sat on the fence I'd probably have stuck to it.:evilgrin:

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but what are Dimps ?

I am guessing it is a local colloquilism for Cigarette Butts but would be interested to be educated..

From the fountain of knowledge known as the Urban Dictionary:

End of a cigarette or spliff that has been 'dimped' or 'pecked' out - extinguished - with the intimation that some (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=some) tobacco or dope (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=dope) remains (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=remains) smokable, either by re-lighting the original item(while burning your (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=your) nose-hair) or re-cycling with other dimps into a new roll-up or spliff.

The tramp searched for dimps on the floor (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=floor) around the bus stop.
