Only one choice this week as only one ale sampled, the incomparable Oakham Bishops Farewell.

Lots of beers this weekend at the Nottingham beer festival and pubs in Nottingham, there is too many to list.

My beer of the week goes to Two Roses Summer Special at 4.1% this was a very refreshing drink and the only one we went back to.

My beer of the week Full Mash Warlord from Nottingham beer festival. I remembered to put ticks on good beers, and that one had the most ticks. I must say that Gundog, a new brewery for me had an excellent one called Falling Pheasant though.

I kept an eye out for you Gill, but didn't spot you or Ray on Saturday. Enjoyed a shorter visit this year, but found the programme and stillage layout frustrating, especially having been so impressed with the simplicity and clarity last year. Didn't manage to find Mallinsons or Millstone casks and abjectly failed to record the many thirds & halves tried, so will have to give the gong to one of the few I remember; the peachy Brewsters Decadence pips Funfair Ghost Train.

Ticked some new (to me) Nottingham hostelries afterwards - West Bridgeford's Poppy & Pint, Stratford Haven & Trent Bridge Inn ('TBI'), and had intended to aim for Organ Grinder & Navigation too, but time and lack of stability were against me, so just managed Newshouse before £1 train back to London, thereby breaking the LAW which demands that Vat&Fiddle is always the first, and last, pub visited in these parts. We were foolish enough to debrief in the Doric Arch and later (now solo) in West Norwood's Hope. No wonder that today is an almighty struggle!

Re V&F, I quite like the opening up of the area to the rear/right of bar, and addition of dartboard & bar-billiards, but less convinced about the overly bright room added to the far left, which presumably acts as the break out area for brewery tours?

A difficult week, I didn't think anything might qualify having spent Saturday in the pit that is Horsforth and Wednesday in the worse horrors of Daventry; however a few late contenders appeared in the form of Naylors Aire Valley Bitter, Oakhams Montpessons Gold and Caledonian Imperial Russian Stout. It just shows that brewers of mediocre trash like Greene King IPA, London Pride and Deuchars can scale the heights and produce gems like Suffolk Strong, 1845 and Vintage Ale, and Caledonian IRS. However I think Naylors AVB just beats the Oakham and the Cale'.

Very quiet week this week for me

Buxton - Kinder Downfall
Elland - EWA
Salamander - Glowing Tribute
Kelham Island - Bub Edkins

BOTW Salamander - Glowing Tribute , dangerously easy to drink for a 5.2%

A quiet midweek boosted by a good 'Spoonfest session on Saturday in Bromley. Top of the pile for me was the Caledonian Imperial Russian Stout in the Grevyhound, a very drinkable beer for a 6%'er and not really my sort of thing but couldn't knock it.

BOTW for me was Penzance Brewing IPA,a 6%er and easily quaffable in The Bridge Inn,Bristol. The barman realised I was not a local ,and asked me if I was planning to do any business that afternoon just in case I had failed to notice the ABV.I liked his subtle approach, but reassured him that I was only in Bristol for the beer.Great ale in a very friendly pub.

It's taken a while, but I finally seem to be finding some beers I like at the JDW festival. The best of the bunch so far has been the Roosters Last Stand, which is a worthy BOTW, although the Adnams American IPA ran it close (and was better than the three American beers I've tried so far).

Honorable mentions to Ringwood Ground Hog and Vale Gravitas as well.

A couple of JDW visits and a trip round Halifax helped this weeks selection.

Wentworth Kryptonite was good in The Pump Room as was Salamander Skedaddle in Dirty Dicks, both Halifax.

Adnams IPA and Salopian Vapour Trail both went down well in The Regal Moon.

BOTW is going to be Marble Lagonda No. 3, a trial brew tried in The Baum.

Bit late for this one, my BOTW is Dancing Duck Gold at the ever-reliable Nags Head.
