A London get together was discussed on this thread: http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?8461-One-door-opens-amp-another-closes/page3

The idea is to visit the newly restored and reopened Red Lion in Leytonstone for their beer festival which is running for two weeks from 10th October.

A few people have said they would be available for a meet up during the second week of the festival (w/c 17th October), so it would be good if we could firm up a date and entice a few more of you along. The pub is close to Leytonstone tube station, which is a 15 minute or so ride from Liverpool St on the Central Line. There are a couple of other pubs nearby including a JDW and the GBG listed North Star.

I'm free on the 18th, 19th and 20th and could probably make the 17th as well, but I wouldn't be able to commit to that until nearer the time.

Anyone else fancy it?

I can only do the Wednesday (19th) that week but at the moment I can do Mon (10th) Tues (11th) Wed (12th) or Fri (14th) the previous week.

My last 3 days holiday entitlement for this year start on the 19th.... Which is kind of handy.

I'll open up an A-Z or Bing Maps in a moment, but the Brodies pub (King William IV, I think it's called?) is in the neighbourhood, is it not?

... the Brodies pub (King William IV, I think it's called?) is in the neighbourhood, is it not?

This is it... (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/25128/) According to Google maps, it's a 15 minute bus ride (Kirkdale Road (Stop M): 257; alight at Lea Bridge Road Bakers Arms (Stop ND)). Or you could walk (10 mins?) to Leytonstone High Road and catch a train to Leyton Midland Road, then walk again (10 mins?). Walking door to door is about 40 minutes.

I'd be more interested in taking in just these two than doing the JDW and North Star, GBG listed or not! Anyone got views on meeting in either King William or Red Lion first?

Now then, I'd like to come to this but there's a (hopefully!) distinct possibility I will have an interview the following day. I've been meaning to get out to East London for a while so if I cannot make it, I will follow your antics with interest and re-create the route myself over Xmas!

TfL reckon I can walk between the Red Lion & King Billy in 25 minutes (I told them I was a quick walker). I'm keen to give the King William a try-out, having had a few (but by no means enough) Brodies ales and liking the look of their line-up.

RogerB
10-10-2011, 21:34
It's 1.6 miles (31 mins walk accoording to Bing Maps) between the 2 - must admit I thought they ere closer together than that and there isn't even a "lucky dip" pub half way is. Looks like the W15, W16 and W19 buses go roughly between the 2 if anyone is feeling lazy.

I suggest meeting in the Red Lion first, because it'll be getting towards the end of the 2nd week of the beer festival, so there's every chance it'll be a wash out. If not, great. But if it is, at least we'll have the Brodies to look forward to.

trainman
11-10-2011, 11:24
I'd agree Red Lion first. For the selfish reason that I haven't been before. Plus, in the warm arms of £1.99ppint at KW, one can become disinclined to move on! Lazy bus for me!

I'm not too bothered which way round we do them but the main consideration is getting home afterwards and the Red Lion is more convenient for a tube station. I don't mind a hike to get to a pub but would prefer a quick and easy getaway late at night after I've had a few!

Fair point Roger, tho Walthamstow and Leyton tubes should be busable from KW in ~10mins later evening. I note the W16 from Leytonstone (tube) to KW is listed at just 7mins.

RogerB

Looking at various options but I will probably bus it to Canning Town or Stratford and pick up Tube or DLR from there.

RogerB
12-10-2011, 11:41
Had a message from the boss at the Red Lion - there will be 80 ales and 10 farmhouse ciders over the festival period and the plan is to have 10 Festival ales available on any given day across the 2 weeks, 5 from up north and 5 from down south. Obviously he can't say what will be on by the 19th but I don't think there will be any problem of ale shortage whether we get there first of last.

12-10-2011, 14:28
I don't really mind which pub we start at. What sort of time will you all be arriving? I'll probably struggle to get there before 18:30 - 19:00 unfortunately.

Okay, unless there are any late objections, shall we settle on meeting at the Red Lion on the 19th Oct from 5pm onwards with a view to moving on to the King William later in the evening.

Look forward to seeing you all there.

Still hoping to make it, but unlikely to be there before six. I have Roger's number so will probably call (if that's OK with him) when I get off the tube to confirm where you all are.

I'll probably be in work clobber but apart from Sheffield Hatter I think I have met everyone a few times times so we should all find each other relatively easily.

No problem.

Wow - that's the first time I have used the multiquote - feeling quite pleased with myself.

Sorry Gents, won't be able to join tomorrow as others have considered customer issues come before me having a beer, so will be heading to the airport first thing tomorrow morning instead......:(

Anyway, have a good one...

RogerB
19-10-2011, 09:02
Beers currently on according to the boss - Grain Bramble & Best Bitter, Green Jack RIPPER (8.5%), Allgates Twitter and Busted, Wolf Brewery Whistle, The Otter Brewery Otter Head, Box Brewery Derail Ale, Mighty Oak Simply the Best, Cottage Brewery Trident and Antic's Burnham No6 IPA (special brew). Sounds good but I might give the Ripper a miss!

You don't even find Leyton Orient shirts in Leytonstone on a Wednseday evening, especially when they have a home match.

Good to see all those there tonight - and even managed to get back via a quick stop at the Rack & Tenter to claim my free pint from those nice people at Marstons - but look out for Paul's review of the King William the Fourth!

RogerB
20-10-2011, 09:14
Was a good night - great to see everyone again. Had a message from the Red Lion boss on Facebook hoping we all enjoyed his beers! Certainly was a couple of dodgy pints in the King Bill 4 - I hope that is not going to be a recurring problem as I have have not encountered it before from anyone I know who has been there. At least it gave us an opportunity to tick off another 'Spoons festival beer down the road. Managed to get home in one piece and even resisted the temptation of the kebab shop.

I believe we all stuck our names down for a trek around Carshalton at some stage so will have to get that sorted out once Nottingham is out of the way.

Well, yes, as I think we discussed: how to review without getting the solicitors round to PG Towers.....

A good night out, though, in so far as I remember it

I had a great crawl round Carshalton on 13 August 2005 i managed 9 one was closed, the locals in the Hope were slagging my home town off but light heartedly about the gun crime at the time.
I really enjoyed all the pubs in carshalton and managed to get 1 in beddington and 1 in wallingon before going to Sutton where i did 7 more pubs and i then ended up in Pimlico where i did 3 more pubs and ended up in the worst pub of the day the Lord Burleigh,i usually end up in a dive thats par for the course for me.

I hope you all have a good time there like i did.

I think I've been fair.

Agreed, nothing to argue about there. Any beer can go off, but it would have been better customer service for them to have replaced your first pint. It had the small of rancid raisins - definitely not what the brewer intended. The beers I had, on the other hand, were probably a bit young...

BTW, forgot to say - I had a very enjoyable evening and it was great to meet you guys. Hope to see you again before long.

If I hadn't been there and witnessed (ie tasted) them myself I would think you were crackers. Just goes to show that maybe we shouldn't always take previous reviews as gospel no matter how good a pub's reputation is.

Looks like a good day out to me. If you want a stop off at Bethnal Green, I would suggest trying The Camel (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/24941/). They do good pie and mash as well.

Make sure you time your visit to Tap East so as to avoid the worst of the shoppers. To get there from the tube station, you have to walk the full length of the Westfield shopping centre. It was packed on my mid-week visit - I dread to think what it will be like on a Saturday.

Ah, good shout but have already 'done' that one before, this is a virgin pubs tour. Mind you, should we be needing a curry later on the day!
