If it's half as good as Sheffield Tap...

Well it will be only half the distance from Leeds! (As the train goes)

We've booked a trip to York for the weekend before Xmas, so hoping it will be complete for then. Banners at York fest said opening in November, so should be ok, even if they over run a little.

Are you sure? The place will be absolutely heaving. Still, I've got to admire your dedication Gill. :D

There were only 3 days available to book on site for the whole of Nov and Dec so we booked them. Yes it will be hectic, but we are just round the corner from the Slip and the Swan so just far enough for a bit of tranquility if needed, but near enough to be a short walk to anywhere.

Great news-I'm hoping to be in or near York early next month-I'll definately go and have a look to see if it is open.

I don't get up there till December, but am really looking forward to going. Sheffield Tap is great, so this one sounds mind blowing.

Right, I am on a one day coach trip to York next week [based Leeds area] I have never been to York, is the station easy to find? Any clues? I guess coach will chuck us off at a bus / coach station, is the rail station near or miles away?

If I find it I will give it a go, but the Minster must come first with the camera

Are there translation facilities for Southerners? Or do I just chuck "by 'eck" in now & then ?

PS, despite the Avatar I do not actually own a flat cap, so may not blend in ;)

The company already have the Pivni in York of course, which I presume they are keeping on, as well as the Euston Tap in London. They are allegedly about to open a Cider Tap adjacent to the latter. Wonder where they are looking at next?

It depends on which coach but the Megabus and National Xs usually stop under the city walls opposite the railway station, not sure about private hire coaches, I suspect by the railway station as well. BUT the Tap will not be open next week. From the station you walk past the big hotel then go through the arch in the walls, turn left and keep going up the hill to the Minster (The Maltings (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/43595/) is on the right when you cross Lendal bridge).

Some coaches stop at Askham Bar which has a park and ride bus into the city centre, others go to Piccadilly which is almost in the middle of the old city and a shortish walk to the Minster. The Blue Bell (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/43505/) is the best pub near Piccadilly and there are several good ones near the Minster, the Three Legged Mare (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53953/), and the Guy Fawkes (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53950/) for example.

It's much easier to find by train from Leeds :D

Just shout clearly and slowly and they'll probably get it, you could also say "eh oop, lad" quite often.

Perhaps you could borrow one and a whippet would also help.:p

This was an issue for me when I went to York last year. I thought that saying "arrr mooch" whenever I was asked for money might help me to blend in, but I think I gave the game away whenever I said "and take that sparkler off please".

You'll never blend in up north Rex, as long as you persist in wearing a coat when it isn't raining or below 10C.

If I remember correctly it was around this time of year that the Euston Tap opened so they're obviously hoping the Xmas trade might kick things off. Good luck to them, it looks bigger than the Euston property which is a major restriction for them, especially during the winter months. Although it's in the station I hope there is the opportunity for an outside overspill. They'll also need to think carefully about pricing, I can't see the good folk of Yorkshire taking kindly to the sort of prices we see at Euston.

I asked on scoopgen site for a rundown of what open day at York was like, and this is the reply I got.

"Happy to help Gill. York Tap opened to the general tap at 2pm, and I got in shortly afterwards. I could only stay for a couple as I'm working nights tonight. Anyway here are what beers are on at the moment:

Hand Pump

Magic Rock Curious NZ 3.9 (brewed with Nea Zealand hops instead of American)
Ilkley Tap 3 Northern Clout 4.2 (brewed for the York Tap)
Marble Dobber 5.9
Marble Lagonada IPA 5.0
Fyne Hurricane Jack 4.9
Fyne Jarl 3.8
Tempest Elemental 5.1
Tempest Emanation 4.5
Dark Star Hophead 3.8
Dark Star American Pale Ale 4.7
Kirstall Black Band Porter 5.3
Magic Rock High Wire 5.5
Ilkley Best 4.0
Thornbridge Pivni 3.2
Thornbridge / Kernal Coalition Burton Ale 7.2
Thornbridge Coalition Old Ale 7.0
Flying Dog Imperial IPA Centennial (aged for 6 months)
Keg

Bernard Svetle 3.8
Bernard Cerny 5.1
Bernard Nefiltrovane 5.0
Timmermans Strawberry 4.0
Cantillion Rose de Gambrinus 5.0
Thornbridge Jaipur 5.9
Opat Cranberry Pilsner 4.8
Erdinger Urweiss 5.2
Black Isle Organic Blonde 4.5
Schlenkerla Urbock 6.5
Magic Rock Cannonball 7.4

Cider

Thirsty Cross Ginger Cider 4.0

It has a similar feel to the Sheffield Tap, but is much larger, and more spacious. It has been beautifully restored with 2 large glass domes in the roof. The bar is in the middle and has 3 sides to it. Hand pumps are on two sides with the keg taps on the third.

There are two entrances to the pub, one from platform 3, and one from the left side of the building looking from the street. The only down side is that there aren't too many tables on the platform side of the bar, which is a pity as there is a superb view of York station"

Still about 4 weeks till we can get up there..

Enjoyed reading that, although the effort from our very own 'short, fat, balding old git' of Ripon wasn't bad either:

York of course believes Norwich cheated in some way  but it doesn't matter as both cities are wrong as this handy chart shows:

City............No of beers on sale.............date of survey
Derby...................176....................... .... (Feb 11)
Nottingham...........251.......................... ..(Sep 11)
Norwich................254........................ ....(Jun 12)
