when I first started drinking we used to get a pony (spirit glass of beer) to drink with our nips

I remember this was talked about in a thread last year My opinion was its OK for Lady's drinking Lager but cant see many men say I will have a two third a Pint may as well just get half.
I would prefer them too bring back the Quart Jug

Yes please!

Although it would be hard to re-establish it as the standard as it was before 1914, especially as there are so moany stronger beers around now.

I was once refused a pint of Leffe in a hotel in Southampton as it was "too strong" . The barman was quite happy to sell me two halves, but looked at me oddly when I asked for an empty pint glass as soon as I'd paid.

Would the pubs charge more than the price of two pints though? :p

Before 1914 beer in general was stronger than today so I don't see a problem :D. I used to work in a pub that still had a couple of Quart glasses in the dimple style - blooming heavy when full! A lot of the regulars there had their own German litre glasses which is approaching a quart.

The same happened to me in a Liverpool pub with Leffe and years ago a Hampshire landlady refused to sell Gales HSB to "you young lads" as "we couldn't take it". Oh yes we could.

The Old Corner Pin in Nottingham city centre would only sell beers in halfs and this was still going on untill the late 80s.

So when i went in here with my wife we would always ask for two pints of Home Ales bitter knowing full well they would'nt serve us two pints, we would then asked for four halfs and there was no problem.
These little games kept us happy.
