Had to pass through London to get to Scotland, but no signs of trouble in the airport region.

It reminds me of the old saying - "red sky at night, Tottenham's alight".

Changed trains at Clapham Junction about 10:30 last night, station was closed from the outside. Dreadful stench of smoke filled the train as we passed through East Croydon, I fear to think what the people getting off there found.

Managed not to get caught up in anything so far. Was due to go to Wembley tomorrow for the England v Holland game but that's now called off and could be an interesting trip to White Hart Lane on Saturday if it goes ahead.

I would so love to smack some of these morons over the head with an iron bar.

I also suspect there will be a few pub closures / refurbishments coming up over the next few days.

Thanks Gill,

Basically battened down the hatches last night as I am in the middle of Enfield (2 miles away) Wood Green (2.5 miles away and went off Saturday night but largely unreported) and Tottenham (3 miles away). Fortunately none of these went off again last night, presumably because there's nothing left in Comet, and Hackney is on the other side of the great divide that is the A10 artery into London.

So sat in listening to all the sirens. Normally we sit there wondering what bit of local trouble the Old Bill are rushing to, so it was a bit of a surreal experience being able to watch where they were going live on BBC News Freeview..

I also have tickets for the Tottenham game on Saturday but, like Roger, I will be very surprised if the sporting events go ahead in London if this continues throughout the week...

Ah well you only gave it a 3. Make sure you mark it up as closed!

Perhaps of more concern is the fate of the Falcon at Clapham Junction if things kick off again tonight. Or the Pembury in Hackney.

Done. Never mind, I'm sure Tim Martin already has another building nearby earmarked.

I was about to mark it as closed but someone beat me to it! It wasn't the best 'Spoons around but losing any pub in Woolwich that sells real ales is a major loss.

A news clip just before clearly showed The Falcon with a fire appliance parked in front, hope there's no damage.

I once experienced a riot whilst drinking in the Victoria a couple of years ago! A pitched battle with Cardiff City fans was going on outside and then all of a sudden the front windows came crashing in. Scary stuff.

I had a wander around Croydon this morning after watching things unfold on the TV last night. The level of destruction is quite spectacular, especially around West Croydon and I understand that trouble has already broken out again today in Thornton Heath, to the North of the borough.

There's a very tense atmosphere in work today - apparently our building was targeted last night but security kept them at bay.

I'm not aware of any local pubs being damaged, but there was an excellent interview on the BBC last night with the landlord of the Old Fox and Hounds pub opposite West Croydon station, in which he described his attempts to evacuate his customers, including a 90 year old lady, at the exact moment that the rioters charged the police.

Could be fun around here on Saturday , EDL are holding a march in Wellington near a mostly Muslim area with tensions already running high in the area and Telford are playing Luton just round the corner , instead of calling the game off the police have put it back to 19 45 so the towns going to be full of pissed up Luton fans , i am staying in on Saturday

If this is still going on when firms at at large on Saturday, I expect a fair few kid rioters won't be returning home Saturday night, the football fans will see to that. All the sports fans I have on social networks are appalled at what has been going on and sports fans/firms probably make up the majority of the vigilante groups that were walking the streets in many towns and cities last night to keep them safe.

Maybe in these times of increasing privatisation and "public/private partnerships" there is an opportunity for the Police to sub-contract some of their work to Millwall FC Supporters Club?

As I drove past this morning on my way into work there were smashed windows, the remains of a badly burned chair out on the pavement and the pub was taped off by police. Pity they can't just pick the pub up and move it to a better area. I hope it's not too serious - I'll keep you posted if I see any updates in the local press

There were police everywhere in London yesterday and Hampstead high street was shut down at 16.00. It's not a great solution and I wonder how long a 16000 strong police presence can be maintained. Maybe the powers that be are hoping the yoofs will get bored and go back to robbing and killing each other.

No, but Carphone Warehouse, Orange and Vodafone are all within spitting distance of each other and there are a couple of music equipment shops stacked with top end speakers etc.

Fortunately, for me at the very least, E Dorset has been pretty well insulated to date. None the less, on Tuesday afternoon I spent a very embarrasing ten minutes sat in a local pub having a quiet drink with visitors from New Zealand. They were genuinely shocked and I was both mortified and mystified by the images on the TV. I was unable to offer any tenable explanation for what I was seeing.

I'm in my 75th year, this is my country, the one I revere, have carried arms for. I love it, probably beyond life. There is no excuse, it is theft and thuggery, no more, no less. Words fail me, I'm overwhelmed by disgust, both by the events and by the constant excuses for it.

Rant over.:cheers::cheers::cheers:

Sorry about me sporadic support of the site recently, but me health and the afore mentioned years have weighed heavy. Lately I'm more used to popping pills than supping ale. This too will change:pray::drinkup::drinkup:

You'll be pleased to know that the game has now been called off.

But I think the phrase you were looking for was pissed off, not pissed up, as this link (http://www.lutontown.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10372~2409007,00.html) will show. Bit like Running Dog, all quite in Hampshire, except for a few doughnuts arrested for tweeting & trying to set up riot in Bournemouth, must be simple in the head, riots in Bournemouth? Plus a trio from Southampton (http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/law-and-order/man_charged_with_making_riot_threats_on_facebook_1 _2960939)

The only fire has been Harry Redknaps proposed property empire (http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/local/east-hampshire/southsea_fire_not_linked_to_riots_1_2947396) burnt down on Monday, it was stressed it was nothing to do with rioting, and Harry was not in the area with matches either :D [ for those not in know, Harry has trouble with Planning permission on the adjoining site]

Excerpt from News comments section, no truth in it at all of course
Police are looking for a middle aged man with a heavy cockney accent muttering under his breath 't'rific' and 'down to the bare bones'.

PS the Daily Mash take on it Looters return stuff to Games Workshop (http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/society/looters-return-stuff-to-games-workshop-201108124191/)

Just returned from two weeks in Cornwall. One of the joys of camping is that the pace of life tends to slow right down, including limited access to the media. You can imagine our surprise when we eventually heard about all the rioting, it just seemed unbelievable.

There have been some dreadful stories about people being attacked and losing everything, but I still couldn't help feeling angry about The Barton Arms.

The footage, which has been released by the police to encourage members of the public to come forward, shows a group in the Newtown area late on 9 August.

The group, all masked and all wearing black clothing, caused extensive damage at the Barton Arms pub.

"This investigation is being treated as attempted murder and arson"

I've been all for throwing the book at rioters and this just reinforces my view. Little fuckers.

From CAMRA's pub heritage monthly mail-out:

WEST MIDLANDS, Bartons Arms, Aston, Birmingham There were tales in the local press of `serious damage' during the recent riots. CAMRA's West Midlands Regional Director Gary Timmins visited and reports: `the pub had six large windows smashed, but none of the ornate frosted glass was damaged though. A small part of the bar was damaged by fire but it didn't spread far (fortunately). The reports that it was burned out and ransacked are greatly overstated. Because of these reports, business had dropped off somewhat.' The pub is up and running again, so keep visiting this great pub and drinking its Oakham Ales.

Great news

Had a stroll down Tottenham High Road last night before/after the Hearts game. Plenty of boarded up shops still and gaping holes where some of the worst affected buildings have had to be demolished. You can still smell the charred remains as you walk down the road.

I picked up the latest edition of Out Inn Brum today. The Lamp in Digbeth/Highgate was also attacked by a local gang during the unrest a few weeks ago. The gaffer, Eddie, was thrown head first down into the cellar. He has gone back to Ireland to recover for a few weeks. There was a photo of the pub boarded up but I'm not sure if it's opened again. I may see if I can pop down soon and have a look.
