As long as there is some flavour to them they should be ok. We have had some around 3% that were great to drink, but they need to have something going for them.

The worse one I had was Bewdog Nanny State 1.1% at Dudley beerfest a couple of years ago and it was horrid. Nothing to it and not enjoyable as a drink at all.

Whilst many pubs, including my local, charge as much for lemonade as 4 % plus ale I wonder just how popular this would be? It would be strange to find low strength beer cheaper than lemonade

PS, the lemonade is out of the hose thingy, not some branded bottle

I didn't like pubs charging the earth for coke and lemonade drinks when they picked up a Tesco 2 litre bottle (under 20p?) in view of the customer to pour it out.

Point taken though, can't see beer of any ABV coming cheaper than the non alcoholics.

The margin is even more astronomical with postmix machines, which, after the apparatus has been paid for, involves about 2p worth of concentrate for a pint of fizzy drink. I guess it subsidises the beer a bit.

I think the biggest take-on you ever see anywhere is that between a small cup of tea and a large, where you still only get one teabag but can easily pay 70 or 80p for about 100ml of extra hot water.

I saw Fullers' new 2.8% offering, ironically named 'Mighty Atom', for the first time in the Old Bank of England the other day, though I couldn't quite bring myself to try it. Wondered if anyone else had?

Tried Brodies 2.8% Summer Stout at the King William IV during the week - not unpleasant, but decidedly 'thin'.

Had several pints of Hopback "HERACLES" 2.8% in Salisbury a few weeks ago. Very good. And £2 a pint !!!! Doesn't appear on their website but that doesn't surprise me.

Also if spotted,Arbor "INFERIORITY COMPLEX" 3.4% should be sampled with reckless abandon owing to it being EXCELLENT. http://arborales.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=47&Itemid=53

Arbor are an excellent brewery and their beers are worth seeking out. Inferiority must be one of my favorites, dark, hoppy and with a flavour that smacks more of a 4.0% + beer than 3.4%. Yakima valley at 7.4% is sublime, I could go on...

I had a pint of a previously unseen, for me anyway, Fuller's beer the other day. It was called Mighty Atom and was just 2.8%, but being in London it still cost £3 a pint. It had much more flavour than I expected and I would go for it again I if I do see it again. I was a previously sceptical about the merits of these "weak" beers but maybe there is a future for them.

Had a Batemans Dark Mild a few weeks back in Greenwich. Had to do a double take when I saw it was only 3%. I'm not overkeen on Batemans, Milds or weak beers but this one ticked the boxes.

Ah,Bateman's Mild! One of my desert island beers! I remember being on a Young Farmer's visit to Boston years back, just after XXXB was launched-nectar!

There are some very good weaker beers out there and I'm sure that there'll be many more with the government encouraging breweries to go this way with the duty escalator and CAMRA apparently following suit. My concern would be if these beers started taking over handpumps and we saw a subsequent drop off in the availability of stronger beers. Many issues are raised here: the reduction of consumer choice, the brewing industry being hit by a lumpy tax regime when we really should be encouraging its growth, the real ale sector taking the brunt of the 'solution' to a perceived 'binge drinking' problem etc, etc.

In the meantime, Oakham Endless Summer at 3.4% is very good. Especially when followed by an Attila at 7.5%!

I had a pint of this in the Cock Hotel a few weeks ago , not as good as Hobsons Mild but still pretty good

...not as good as Hobsons Mild....

....but then again, how many are? :)

Not come across too many of these low gravity beers, but I was very impressed with Five Towns Guero 2.9%, a few weeks ago, very nearly BOTW as I recall.

The MP's are going to be very sober if they are drinking 2.8% beer and have their two alcohol free days they have been calling for!:p.

A very good flavoursome weak beer is Llangollen Abbey Grange Bitter at 3.2%. I am sure it would still be decent if tweaked down to 2.8%. Then again, Llangollen brewery are so small they are already paying lower tax.

You can bet they won't be lowering the price they charge in the pubs though

Tried the Adnams Sole Star 2.7% last night in Tapping the Admiral in Camden. It didn't taste watery or weak at all, plenty of body and quite tasty. Would definately have it again. £2.50 a pint wa quite reasonable as well.
