Out of curiosity, following on from my thread about the pub with most reviewers reviews by aggregate, I noticed that a number of us are heading towards a 1000 - I'm about 100 off and MrB is around 50 away.

I won't tell the life insurance people if you don't...

Oh, that sort of milestone. Yes, well done - a sterling effort.

I saw the thread title and thought someone was requesting details of milestones in pub reviews. As it happens there is one outside one of my local pubs telling me it's 15 miles to London. And then there's the London Stone and... I'll get my coat.

Thanks for that Strongers,

I have been busy over the last week sorting more negatives out and putting them onto disc then add to my pub list after which i add them to PG.

Lots of London pubs coming up as i visited over 900 in London between 2004 and 2010.

Great stuff Al - I guess that means you're one fifth of the way through writing up all your reviews (presuming youve not been in any new pubs since you conceived your username! ;))

Look forward to reading your London reviews.

Thanks for that Pubsignman,

Yes that was why i called myself Al10000 i did my 10000th pub on 20 March 2010,since then i have been in another 233 new pubs to me things have slowed down since i was made redundent.

Regarding London reviews they wont be up to the standards of the regular London reviewers as i used to go in a pub have a half pint and write in my book if it was good or not so good, and i also listed all the real ales that were on the bar i did'nt take any notice of decor or how many rooms the pub had.

 Alan

Where I take my hat off to you Alan, is having the foresight back in the 80s to realise that one day you would have somewhere to display all these reviews, and perhaps more importantly, your pub photo gallery for all to see.

I really don't know how you do it, chaps, but you have my admiration in bucketfulls (or should that be barrelsfull?).

I think the 1000+ list is (in no particular order)

Roger, Rex, Strongers (AKA Steve C), Alan Winfield, Soupy, Quinno :D, JAQPTIO, John McGraw.

Missing anyone else?

Oh Oh, just spotted on my link

"Pubs Contributed to: 666"

And I have a mini milestone due,

"picture contributions to 599 other pubs"

I wil have to check through to make sure my 600th pub picture contribution is worthy of it's place, at least photographically, some from Lincoln may be just the ticket as it was lovely sunny day on my visit, blue skies & fluffy white clouds

I've only really done 1990 unique pubs. I do have 5 more to write up but my plans to visit 5 this afternoon before scurrying home and writing them up to get the 2000 this year were derailed.

Not trying to be pedantic mate, but I reckon you're already there. As it says 599 OTHER pubs, then including the pub you're looking at makes it 600.

Well done to Peter, Al and the rest. Its what makes PuG the best site by far.

A (trivial) question to Admin or anybody - Why does the photo count stop on >5000, but other scores carry on past that to give the exact reading.

Galore Admin
30-01-2012, 06:56
We felt that the number was being used in a manner that was demotivating (which is very much contrary to why they are there) and so we obscured it.

A fairly vague answer, but is pretty much the reason for it. There is no technical (computer) reason that it is done.

The only thing that would upset me would be to discover that the 1,000th review was about a Greene King pub......like my first.

I have to admit to a bit of a backlog, still not tackled the pubs on the Lancashire side of the Pennine Canals nor Will's excellent selections in Sheffield.Going to Cheltenham this Saturday for another crawl but will still be short of the magic number even when up to date.

I don't think the Tweed has been the Border (at Berwick anyway) since the days of Henry VIII. The Salmon Leap is of course the most northerly JDW in England.

Edit: I just noticed it's on the closed or closing list so it won't be the most northerly then!

I knew about that so was on the lookout for any signs but as is often the case there was nothing. I was there on a weekday morning and it seemed no less busy than any other of their outlets at that time of day but the rock bottom guest ale price must say something. Maybe Berwick is too small a town for an outlet that size, although the pub isn't exactly a barn.

Basically yes but I'm not including airport or NEC ones. It's great to visit other pubs and I tend to only do a "Spoons Rampage" in cities or large urban sprawls. With all the closures it requires a huge effort to work out how many I've been to and all I know for sure is it's over 400. My target for the year which is already looking a doddle is to have visited at least one pub for every English County in the JDW directory.

I see that Rex Rattus has just breasted the 2000 review tape, many congratulations. :notworthy:

Given that most of the reviews seem to be in either Central or Greater London,I wonder what percentage of London pubs you have reviewed ,it must be a high percentage.

Congratulations, but also sympathy for having to visit so much overpriced dross which is the norm in London and the South East.

Thanks for that. Of course the advantage of hardly ever visiting pubs outside London is that you don't realise how expensive they are. £4.30 a pint? - that's cheap!

It's about 37%. Others - e.g. Alan Winfield - will have done more.

Yes, congratulations and he has achieved this in under a year. That makes you think considering he says he prefers stronger beers. He also seems to get to a wide variety of places.

Erm, that'll be: the pub loses marks for not having any strong beers! (I must admit to having had a couple of halves of Old Peculier on my cycle rides recently, and they certainly refreshed the parts other beers cannot reach.) Hope he joins us on the forum otherwise he'll be unaware of all these congratulations...

Although Alan Winfield is no longer of this manor,at least as far as the forum is concerned, it is worth noting that his review total has now gone throught the 6,000 barrier, which is quite some achievement.

I also have noticed that his very historic reviews have now been correctly dated which has helped place those reviews in context. That's either a very clever bit of coding,or a lot of hard work for someone so well done.

Indeed he still contributes and remember he still has his blog at http://neverendingpubcrawl.blogspot.co.uk/2016_04_01_archive.html where he writes up historic and recent crawls every so often which are well worth a read.

Thanks all. I've been suffering from a bad case of reviewer's block recentry, dating back to August when I had my phone, containing notes for lots of pending reviews, stolen. Have been bashing my way through my backlog to try and get things back on track before tomorrow's Stockport outing.

I've got no idea, but it must be a lot. I've always written quite detailed reviews because when I first joined the site there was a discussion on here about how to improve the site's Google ranking. It was suggested that Google takes factors such as word count into account when returning search results, so I figured if I wrote detailed reviews, it might improve PuG's prospects of appearing higher up on Google searches, thus generating more interest in the site. Not sure that's what's happened, but I now seem to be stuck with that style of reviewing!
