On my recent bike ride through Somerset I photographed an unknown closed pub in Meare, near Glastonbury. The Google maps street view shows the pub sign still in place - it was missing when I was there last week - but I can't read the name of the pub and the picture is non-standard, so I can't even hazard a guess at it.

Can anyone recognise the pub or make sense of the pub sign?

Cheers

Any chance of a link or some description so that I can isolate it from overhead and post the link? I may be being dumb, but Meare looks like it is too big to just guess.

Hi Conrad,

Sorry, I've just re-read my post and it is a bit vague. The former pub is right at the eastern end of the village near the bus stops by the church and opposite a petrol station. I don't know how to make a link to a Google maps street view. If you've got some easy to follow instructions I'll take a stab at it.

Cheers

I see what you mean about that sign: link (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=meare+glastonbury&ie=UTF8&hl=en&hq=&hnear=Meare,+Glastonbury,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.171497,-2.780702&spn=0,0.002411&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=51.171497,-2.780874&panoid=25UZAm8qOrghmT8FVH4X_g&cbp=12,38.71,,0,4.71)

Linking to maps is one of those embarrassingly easy things to do once you know how. Look to the top right of the map and there is text saying link, click on that, highlight the text, right click and copy. You can then paste that as usual.

Best I can do is that it is 6 letters at the top (Leafer????), bottom appears to say 'Community king of food' (which I assume is completely wrong, but seems to fit :))

Thanks Conrad. The sign looks like a cross between a stylised tree and a pizza with olives. I wonder if it was more of a restaurant than a pub in its last existence. It certainly seemed to be a private house when I was passing last week, but was obviously a pub at some time in the past.

What about this view of another disused Pub sign its the same road as before but right down the other end near the roundabout at the A39 The sign I Guess would have been for the white building beyond the garden.

My father-in-law who comes from these parts tells me that it was the Ring of Bells. That doesn't quite tie in with what can be seen on the sign, so maybe it changed it's name at a later date.

This site should clear things up:

http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-267770-ferlingmere-house-meare

The pub sign isn't a 'pub' sign. The words at the bottom read 'Community Living at Heart'.

Bit more info on the old pub here, inc photo:

This was the "First and Last" pub. It closed somewhere around the late 60's.

Thanks Blackthorn, that's good enough for me.

Thanks

I won't be adding this pub as I didn't get a photo, having entered the village by a different route.
