It seems that the lease is being given up on the Flpra Sandes in Thornton Heath (May 2018) and the Gig House in Wokingham (Sep 2018). The Flora Sandes is popular with the handful of existing Crystal Palace supporters while the Gig House is another doomed Lloyds No 1. My recollection of just a single visit to both is that they are pretty poor JDWs.

I thought The Gig House was crap, but then I would wouldn't I. ;)

To be honest the six I gave it was probably generous. Lloyds bars on a bad day venture into Score Of Shame territory.

Quinno asks in his review of the Harrow On The Hill one if it's their smallest outlet. It isn't as this (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23979/) one is without a shadow of a doubt the smallest. It's also on the edge of outer SE London's micropubland.

The world biggest beer fest starts today at Wetherspoons approx. 30 different cask beers.
Not the worlds biggest beer fest organised by Nottingham Camra also starts today with 1228 different cask beers

I had ten of them today on an East London Rampage. I was surprised to find the weakest one Celt (aka Evan Evans) Castro Mosaic was quite easily the best. The worst was the Zululand one, a complete waste of time.

Should get to try a few at the Mcspoons in Epsom tomorrow. From knowledge of previous fests I would have avoided Zululand beers but any beer with Mosiac hops gets a chance.

No way! It's miles bigger, I suspect Harrow On the Hill may be smaller than that one but they are a completely different shape so who knows. That one near Croydon that became an Antic Pub was one of the smallest but still larger than the Banker's Draft.

The Isaac Wilson in Middlesborough is now closed and it has been announced that the only Crewe outlet the Gaffers Row will close. There are still plenty of outlets up for sale although some of these are already closed. These can be viewed at this (http://www.jdwdisposals.com/Wetherspoon_full/en/page_117985.php) site.
I've no idea why all these places are closing but my guess is that the increases in the minimum wage had tipped these places over the edge, but surely that would affect other pub chains?
I can't help thinking that there is something of a Vanity Project element in some of the new outlets. They built their empire by opening basic outlets in shops and other places that were never that grand but were cheap.
There is a rumour that the relatively new Caley Picture House in Edinburgh may be up for sale but it IS just a rumour.

EDIT:
They seem to have removed the disposal site linked above, it's now a site for getting rid of old white goods!

For some while JDW have had unlimited Filter Coffee refills until 14:00 in their outlets. They now do all day unlimited refills of tea and any coffee via self service machines as well as the Filter Coffee. The price has been increased to £1.40, probably to cater for Philistines like me who once got through 5 Filter Coffees with a breakfast on a hot July morning in the Highbury White Swan when going for a mid morning train.
The new machines are easy to use even for a Luddite like me being no more complicated than using a bank beer token machine.
After waiting for a long food order to go through at the excellent Plymouth Britannia yesterday I jokingly said that at least you don't have to wait behind coffee orders any more. The barman agreed but pointed out that there were still hot chocolate orders!
You can now go to a JDW for up to 18 hours drinking tea and coffee for just £1.40.
Would I have a go at that?? No, it's not my cup of tea.

Bloke on out the streets: "Can you spare 20p for a cup of tea guv?"
Sarcastic bastard: "If you can find a cup of tea for 20p..."

I suppose now we can do "here's £1.40 for seven cups of tea. And you can enjoy Mr Martin's heat and light all day too."

An excellent idea, I know of several in our town who will be glad of the offer, and no, I am not joking.

Now he's having half a million beer mats printed with the "Wetherspoons Manifesto". His attention to detail is so brilliant that he doesn't even know how many pubs are currently in the chain. He says it's 895 excluding Eire but I did a count last night and made it 889 INCLUDING Eire, so his total should have been 884. There are still some more to close, more than new ones opening.
If you can't sleep tonight you can read all about it here (https://www.jdwetherspoon.com/tims-viewpoint/the-wetherspoon-manifesto), it's much more effective than a sleeping pill.

I regularly look at a JDW tickers forum and they are up in arms about a new menu being trialled in about 100 outlets that makes massive cuts to the existing one. I haven't seen it myself but complaints are the dropping of the Soup and the Lamb Shank which is the only dish remotely resembling a Sunday Lunch. More than one correspondent said that they don't eat in Spoons any more but go for a Marston's outlet or even (shock horror!) a Hungry Horse. These are committed Spoons fans which must be worrying for the company.
The recent Steak Club problem was caused by a sudden inspection of their supplier Russell Hume site in Birmingham where the Food Standards Authority found “serious non-compliance with food hygiene regulations”. I remember reading an announcement from JDW the following day stating that the problem was down to "labelling", obviously a cover up.
Pete Brown has blogged a criticism of Tim Martin's Brexit activities because it is politicising the company, a point I totally agree with and have mentioned elsewhere on these forums.
When Steakgate hit the headlines Tim Martin claimed that he didn't even know about it until he saw the newspapers. He is so obsessed woth Brexit that he has responded to the Brown blog as well as having a pop at the Mayor of Liverpool, all while the Tuesday Steak Club is falling apart.
On a personal note I've noticed a terminal decline in some of my local Spoons as well as nationally a general decline in the choice and quality of Real Ales. There is apparently a drive for lower costs which means cutting staff who seem to be lacking in many outlets.
In December the manager of one of my local Spoons (which I'd stopped using due to the poor beer choice) resigned with immediate effect and refused to serve out his notice. Other local Spoons I've visited seem to be in a state of crisis or I've heard words to confirm that.

The Chichester Lloyds closed last Sunday and there are no new outlets opening until March. A few outlets are being converted into Hotels but they are dearer than advance bookings at a Travelodge or Premier Inn so I generally won't use them.

As far as I can see the guest beers are getting duller as you hardly ever see the more interesting ones from the current list. I've only been to 5 JDWs this year and the only one that seems to be putting in an effort on the beer front is the Wolverhampton one which had Pale Rider on last Saturday. I've been to the Surbiton one a few times but will give the Kingston one another try some time. I think my local ones are suffering from an idiot area manager.

Well if JDW's punters will only pay £1.99 (or £1.49 with a Camra voucher) for a pint of it it's hardly surprising.

Some outlets (and an ever increasing number IMO) don't sell many cask ales apart from the JDW Trio Of Doom. Many have just one or two options and it's even worse if you go to Scotland. The strange thing is that lots of people drink the dross from the global abominations whether it be lager, Guinness or rubbish keg cider. Most of the lagers and Guinness are more expensive than the cask. There tends to be more cask on at weekends. I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that the North of England Spoons overall have better beers than Scotland & Wales and The South. Even then there is the problem that the price differential between a JDW and a "proper" pub is probably not as great as the £1.00 plus in London and the South.

It depends where you go and how well the manager gets on with the dray (an old manager at the Baron Cadoagn used to somehow get his hands on a lot of Orkney Dark Island....)

I was in the Back of Beyond in Reading last week and had two excellent pints of Titanic Black Ice and Salopian Hop Twister, with two other local beers as backup. None-too-shabby.

But yes, there seem to be fewer proper guests of decent quality now in many Spoons. But given the gnats chuff selling margins and the larger tap availability elsewhere nowadays, perhaps a number of breweries who used to sell to Spoons no longer feel the need to do so?

I'd almost be tempted to drop my total 'Spoons boycott if I could always get Dark Island there. But on the other hand, I'd always have a sneaking suspicion that they'd tweaked the recipe to fit the price...

It also helps a great deal to have a manager or at least one duty manager that is keen on real ale. If you've got senor staff who won't even try a taste of the stuff to see if it's OK then it's a bit of a lost cause.

With the almost without warning closure of the White House at Stockley Park last Sunday and the closure of the Thornton Heath Flora Sandes by mid May the two new ones in Norfolk last month have been cancelled out. The White House was a Lloyds so thy all remain ion the endangered list and was arguably the most obscure of Greater London JDWs. The Aberdeen Airport one closed recently although they are rather transient. Bizarrely this was a GBG entry but that CAMRA branch seem to want to make up their quota regardless of other considerations.
The only new definite opening is one at Liskeard, Cornwall in June but it looks like the much awaited one at Midsomer Norton in Somerset could open in September,
Meanwhile existing outlets are being converted to JDW Hotels with Andover having been converted and Canterbury to open next month. They have loads of planning applications in, including unlikely places like Barkingside not far from me, Blackburn and the infamous Bright Helm in Brighton.

Maybe JDW have bought it as the Farcebook page has been taken down! I couldn't find anything online about it so it may just be a rumour.
I don't think new outlets are much of a priority at the moment as so much effort is going into increasing their hotels. However, I'm guessing a New Street outlet (or even St Pancras) would be a money spinner.

This is also going to be one of their hotels. The Old Borough which is the JDW at Swords will include a hotel from July this year.
If you saw what it's costing me for a Dublin Travelodge in June it would become obvious why all this commotion is happening. I was told by someone this week that some Dublin bars increase their prices by a Euro per hour as the evening progresses and I've no doubt that they start at a rip off level If the Eire JDWs do 3 Black Sheep Pathmakers for a fiver or whatever I'll get by.

Great, now one can create the complete Wetherspoon's experience at home, 4 pack of Doom & a frozen ready meal from local supermarket, ping the meal, dob it onto the Vintage etc plate, tip some of the Doom on your carpet, sit & savour the atmosphere, maybe your partner could scowl to enhance the ambiance?

I don't like these plates at all and if I remember rightly were preceded by square white plates. What really makes my blood boil is when you order a dish and it comes served in a bowl rather than a plate. Examples that spring to mind are haggis (in Scotland or Burns week), sausage & mash and worst of all the Lamb Shank.

I don't believe this story. I've been in a JDW when the maintenance man has been attending to one of these machines and as soon as he opened it a very loud alarm went off which he took some time to silence. To add to that, all the ones I've bothered to look at have a huge padlocked iron or steel bar guarding them so unless this bloke had Doctor Who's Sonic Screwdriver I don's see how that tool could gain access to the money. The whole thing seems far fetched to me!

Can't speak for JDWs but I know a few years back my local, Fullers, had it's fruit machine broken into while pub was open.

A group "distraction" theft, split bar, one barmaid, lunchtime, the women went on & on about menu with barmaid, men playing pool in games area, where fruit machine is. No alarms on machine. They opened it up & nicked the cash

I fear St. Pancras' management has messed up big-time with allowing this outlet to open. Part of the appeal of the station's redevelopment was to turn it into a tranquil and pleasant shopping space with no fast food vendors or mass entertainment spaces. Pancras Road won't look attractive with dozens of smokers pouring out onto it and when the rowdy football crowds are in town, this section of the station may become a no-go area - I doubt the local businesses at this end of the station are looking forward to this arrival one little bit.

I think you're getting a station Spoons confused with the older high street outlets. Unless there's an entrance directly onto St Pancras Way there won't be any more smokers than there are now with the entire station area being a no smoking zone. It won't get a sizeable daytime brigade if any at all as it'll be too expensive compared to the suburbs. How does the Betjeman Arms contribute to this "tranquil and pleasant shopping space"? Do they get overrun with rowdy football fans?
IMO they ruined St Pancras with the conversion by cramming four different lines into an inappropriate two storey station. I bet John Betjeman wouldn't have approved.
The shops are rubbish but as we keep hearing on the news shopping has been transformed by the internet.

I don't get this. I suspect the "Standard" (sadly not the one edited by the idiot George Osborne) has screwed up big time here. Dogs haven't been allowed in JDWs for many years now, so many that I couldn't even tell you when the ban was introduced. Do you welcome dogs?

While we are fond of dogs, we permit only registered assistance dogs inside our pubs and hotels. To avoid any confusion or unnecessary upset, please ensure that your dog is wearing the recognisable leash/collar or harness. It would also be helpful if you could bring along suitable documentation to explain the dog’s purpose.

A limited number of pubs do permit dogs on a lead into the garden and/or other external areas. Please check directly with the pub which you are planning to visit.

I'd heard about it being unbranded but will the menus be? Will it be dearer than the Victoria Station one? Time will tell. Re the unbranded issue it doesn't appear as a forthcoming pub on their website. Maybe it's going to be an undercover JDW!

If a pint is £2.19 it will be by my reckoning (probably wrong!) £2.02. It's a smaller discount than the Monday Club, or it was as I haven't checked it out for months. That's one reason I don't agree with this, in a Spoons you save coppers but if you go for a fine dining experience you probably save a substantial amount. I wonder if in the highly unlikely event that a VAT change took place whether anyone would actually reduce their prices. Mullet Man would have egg on his face if he didn't but what about the rest?

This is such a load of cobblers. We haven't left the EU yet so there is no change in any tariffs. If the stuff not from the EU is cheaper it probably reflects seasonal differences more than anything else. If they are paying more for these items and selling them at the same price then it shows what an obsessed dickhead Mullet Man is and I'm pretty sure that's what he is regardless.

Any comments, Tim?

A group of Royal Navy veterans who served on HMS Ark Royal (RO9) were left disgusted after being kicked out of a Wetherspoons pub "during a reunion event.
Around 25 communication veterans who travelled around the world on the ship visited Scotland from all corners of the UK to catch up with lost shipmates, some of whom have not seen one another for more than 40 years.

The group decided to meet at The Standing Order in Edinburgh for a day of reminiscing, food and drink with people arriving from lunchtime.

The group of Royal Navy veterans enjoying a drink in the Standing Order pub before being told to leave by security staff.

But the veterans were astounded when security staff ordered them to leave the premises at around 10.30pm claiming one member of the team giving the reason that ‘you’ve been here a long time’.

Meanwhile other members of the group were refused re-entry.

Alan Willis, 62, who attended from south London, told the Edinburgh Evening News: ‘We were all absolutely astounded. We are extremely disappointed we were ejected from the pub and the reasons still are not clear.

‘One bouncer stated “you have to leave because you’ve been here a long time” while another guy said “you may have had too much to drink”.

‘At no time was there any rowdy behaviour, no drunkenness, no foul language, no abusive behaviour, no loud voices or shouting, no upset, anger or disagreements and certainly no complaints from other users of the pub. We are just a bunch of 60+ year-old veterans spending in excess of £100+ per round on drinks and food.’

The baffled veterans, some serving in the Falklands and Northern Ireland, regrouped at a nearby pub and felt there was a lack of respect to those who fought for their country.

Mr Willis added: ‘It felt as though we didn’t fit in with their clientelle at that time of night. We feel absolutely let down and we’re disgusted with the actions of the security team. Obviously this particular member of the team has very low values and a total lack of respect for those that have served Queen and country.’

However the group refused to let the ordeal spoil their reunion and the following day went onboard the HMY Britannia where they rose a glass of Navy rum to toast their absent friends and lost colleagues.

Mr Willis added: ‘We were frustrated at the time but since then we have laughed about it. It certainly hasn’t tainted what was a fantastic weekend in Edinburgh.’

A Wetherspoon spokesman said: ‘A member of staff noticed that one of the group was unsteady on his feet. He mentioned this to a member of door staff. The door staff member spoke to the group and said that they would not be served until the man, who they said was intoxicated, had left the pub. The shift leader on duty at the time spoke to the group and reiterated the pub’s stance over the individual. One of the group was then abusive to the shift leader. The group was then escorted out. We back the actions of staff.’

Nobody seems to know for sure. It should be as most people have the opening date as the 01st October but they usually open on a Tuesday so it may be the 02nd. London Calling announced that it was two days ago but gave no indication as to where that info came from. I see it's the Millwall fixture. I've seen the stadium from the train but have no idea how to get there. There are loads of pubs around the area between Borough tube and London Bridge but I doubt if any of them are cheap nowadays.

I marked it as open today on the strength of two things. It turns out today is the 150th anniversary of the station which explains the unusual opening date. The second is that it's showing on the JDW site as being open. I haven't been there myself and won't be going for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if it's even more expensive than the Victoria outlet.

To quote Mr Orwell (or Blair)

"But, to be fair, I do know of a few pubs that almost come up to the Moon Under Water. I have mentioned above ten qualities that the perfect pub should have and I know one pub that has eight of them. Even there, however, there is no draught stout, and no china mugs."

I thought I would give a summary of how thinks are looking.
There are no definite new opening until next summer in Eire. One is a big Dublin hotel that I think has been mentioned before and the other is Carlow which is roughly an hour South of Dublin on the Waterford train from Dublin's Heuston Station.

The closures are finally fizzling out with only three on the CBRE disposal list not already closed. These are all in London; the Milan Bar Croydon, the White Lion Of Mortimer in Mitcham and the Crown & Sceptre at the top of Brixton Hill. The Edmund Halley in Lee SE12 is threatened due to redevelopment plans and the Mardi Gras in the Trafforf Shopping Centre in Manchester is under threat because of a huge rent rise.

Their are planning applications for a whole raft of existing outlets to become apart of their chain of hotels. There are also a few applications to expand existing hotels. Generally new hotels involve using space above the existing pub or building something new on a car park or vacant land.

Has anyone used their hotels apart from me? They are generally more expensive than advance bookings in a Travelodge or Premier Inn. This week I booked three nights at the Wigan Premier Inn for only £90.00 next February. I haven't stayed at many of them (maybe half a dozen) but the one I really liked is the Camborne one in Cornwall

I wonder what peoples expectations are from Wetherspoon food. It's basic pub grub and you will get better elsewhere but it will cost you more especially compared to the weekday clubs which include a drink.
The hotels are no better or worse than the budget chains the only real difference being that you get biscuits. I stayed at the Brecon one which claims to have an all night reception but as it's only got a few rooms I wonder if that is the case. It's not a hotel but a Spoons with a few rooms to let as is the Rochester one. The ones that are based above a Lloyds (Henley and Newport spring to mind) are a joke as they are based above a late running night club at weekends.

I don't see how the food can vary since it near all comes from the same suppliers wherever you are, and even the Scottish, Welsh and Irish variants are standardised as far I am know. Service is pretty efficient in most places too, and if you are advised of a wait I think they must add five minutes as a policy since it usually seems to come quicker than stated. I've only had a problem on a very small number of occasions, and if you are looking for a quick, cheap and (mostly) reliable meal then it's hard to beat a 'spoons in my experience.

Yes I've stayed at The Duke of Wellington (JD Wetherspoon) (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33079/) in Minehead on 17/06/2017. Fine apart from Butlins 80's weekend and idiots everywhere but got given room away from main area of the noise so no issues.

Also The Bath Arms (JD Wetherspoon) (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/41953/) in Warminster on 29/04/2016 and woke up with a rash on my body the next morning. I had come from Salisbury the day before but it was pre Novichok although I had been in The Mill (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/41656/) the day before. Maybe the recon team visited it then.

Prices reasonable hence choosing to stay there and Warminster had car parking as I was in my car to do the town, hence booking the hotel.

Talking of Wetherspoons Hotels

"Meanwhile, Wetherspoon Hotels was an unexpected hit – outperforming big brands including Best Western, Hilton and Marriott.
The pub chain, best known for its cheap pints and curry nights, has branched out to offer accommodation in 57 of its historic city-centre properties.
It was also one of the few chains rated four stars for value for money, with guests paying £68 a night, on average."

I've stayed in their hotels at Wigan, Brecon, Ruthin, Camborne and Broughty Ferry near Dundee. The one at Camborne was the best as it's like a proper hotel and is a good Spoons. I got a real pokey little room in Wigan and in Brecon they only have four rooms so the hotel side of it is more an afterthought. My next potential stay will be the new hotel in Dublin later next year but I will check out the prices first.

The Penny Black in Kidderminster is being ditched by September next year.

An application has been made for a licence at the former Bonaparte's Bar on Glasgow Central Station. If that is approved then I would expect it to open before the summer of next year despite there already being two outlets very close. I like Glasgow so look forward to another visit.

Having spent some time in a few JDWs this week I have noticed a few developments.

I get the impression that they seem to be standardising the pricing of beer to £2.15 for a standard guest or even any guest in outlets that were previously more expensive.

Doom Bore has been reduced in price and in a £2.15 standard guest place is now £1.99 although I wouldn't pay £0.99 for that rubbish.

They seem to have ditched the drinks menu so there is no way of knowing if you can get three Pathmaker IPAs for a fiver plus various other examples. If they want to cut down on table clutter then they should get rid of all the idiotic Brexit propaganda.

This is such a load of cobblers. They hardly sell any champagne or brandy in Spoons. They've replaced a wheat beer from the EU with some rubbish from Brains. I wouldn't bother trying either. What Muppet Martin doesn't explain is what will happen to his newly introduced Pizzas if we crash out of the EU. Pizzas are totally reliant on ingredients from Europe and if tariffs are applied to them then they will either have to whack the prices up and risk them becoming unviable or drop them completely after spending a fortune on the new pizza ovens. I suspect the same applies for pork and bacon.

My overriding recollection of Somerset Spoons is that a lot of them weren't that great. In Somerset you have the additional problem of cider being a popular drink and being sold much cheaper than other parts of the UK. I don't mind drinking it if the beer choice is poor.
The perception of a Spoons depends on so many things, the time of year, the day visited, the time visited and whether you go there to eat, drink or both. I'm sure many of the complaints about beer quality on this site are down to getting the first one of the day. You don't generally get dirty tables if you go into one before 10:00am on a weekday.
Going by my scores my top three ones were Portishead, the Pukin Welbeck in Taunton and the Cabot's Court in Weston where I stayed.
The lowest with scores of just 2 were the Wellington one and the Dragon's Inn in Weston where the beer I was served was rank.
I only had a very brief stop a the Coal Orchard which I gave a 5 to.
I thought Bristol was now in Somerset!

Doubtful, if they're old enough to include the ceremonial county in their address they will be old enough to blame Harold Wilson in 1965/1969 or Ted Heath and Peter Walker in 1973 .

Countys have been redundant in addresses for years as far as the Post Office is concerned and local authority changes are merely attempts to disadvantage the opposition (gerrymandering) and the names a sop to the egos of small minded politicians.

It looks like the Captain Alexander near Liverpool's James Street Station will be the first new JDW of the year this May. No news on the Glasgow Central Station outlet but they could do a Barrel Vaults and open it really quickly. In Eire Carlow and the new Dublin hotel could come in summer or autumn and one at Diss in Norfolk is predicted for autumn.
The lease expires on both the Kiddermisnter Penny Black and the Baron Of Hinckley in September. Either could close at any time.

Further to the above, it seems there are actually two new outlets opening in Dublin City this year. The Silver Penny in Lower Abbey Street (NE of O' Connell Bridge) is a church conversion and projected opening date is currently May. The bigger project is the Keavan's Port Hotel which is a new build hotel and pub in Camden Street which is less than a mile SSW from O' Connell Bridge. This is projected for opening in the summer (possibly July). None of the four current "County Dublin" outlets are anywhere near the centre of Dublin but I bet they will be charging "city" prices.

It looks like the Baron Cadogan (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56820/) in Caversham is on the way out.

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/commercial-property-to-let/property-69596401.html

As it's being advertised now one assumes that it will remain as a JDW until someone signs up for a new lease. You have to wonder how many other smaller Leasehold outlets could be under threat.

Does the insurance company of the driver get stung for loss of takings from a spoons until it reopens as well as fixing the pub. That'll be an expensive renewal....

I suspect it will be closed for a few months. Depending on a building survey JDW then have to get their building team in to do the work and they already have major commitments in Eire and with hotel works. If it's a leasehold building I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them just give up on it.

His third party cover (minus his excess...) should pay for it all. Looks like he was no spring chicken, he'll probably do a D of E so renewal won't be an issue.

A new menu went in today which may or may not have included price increases. Beer prices in the tow E11 JDWs have been reduced for some time now. The George has steadily gone down from £2.59 to £2.15 and the Walnut Tree from £2.49 to £2.15 and they no longer have different price bands for premium and standard guests. The Walnut Tree also has a decent new manager which means is usually has a decent choice in good condition. The disaster days seem to be over.
The Spring Festival starts on the 27th of March and has 3 ciders plus the usual 5 "internationals" brewed by larger regionals.
This December sees the 40th anniversary of their first pub. Let's hope Mullet Man has got all this Brexit crap off his chest by then.

Food prices have risen by roughly 5p-20p per item. I don't think beer prices have increased but spirits have by I think 5p a measure. It now costs £1.05 to "double up". Punk IPA is now officially an option as the "free" drink with qualifying meals. Given that it typically costs £3.49 it has become my default option unless there is an outstanding cask on.

I don't see how JDW are any worse than all the other pub chains and fast food outlets. I don't really like chips even if they are cooked as they should be from scratch. There are healthier options on the JDW menu but they are few and far between while many pub menus have none, If children are easting unhealthy food it's entirely down to the parents but of course the Morning Advertiser is the mouthpiece of the hypocrites that run "proper" rip off pubs and moan endlessly about JDW policies that are little different from those of the big brewers and other pub chains.

I don't have any problem with the size of the meals especially if it's a mixed grill or a large breakfast. What annoys me is that so much of it is with chips or mash or a half baked (the rest is microwaved) potato which makes the whole thing rather stodgy. You can have peas which I'm sure even John Major would find boring and occasionally corn on the cob. The chicken club used to be available with a side salad and coleslaw but since they stopped the half of roast chicken has options of chicken bones or bits of white leather.

Wetherspoons are continuing the trend of closing more outlets than they open. With only three definite openings lined up so far this year (Dublin & Carlow in Eire and James Street in Liverpool), the rumour mill went into overdrive this week and there are now 16 that MAY or WILL close this year:-

Burnley – The Burn Lea
Bristol – St Georges Hall
Caversham – The Baron Cadogan
Cheltenham - Bank House
Croydon – The Milan Bar
Dewsbury – The Time Piece
Hawick – The Bourtree
Hinckley – The Baron of Hinckley
Kidderminster – The Penny Black
Lee Green (London) – The Edmund Halley
Mansfield - Widow Frost
Trafford Centre - Mardi Gras
Rotherham – The Rhinoceros
St Helens - Running Horses
Stafford – The Butlers Bell
West Kirby – The Dee Hotel
Wick - Alexander Bain

The Wick one is disappointing as I invested a lot of time and money going there. The Rotherham Rhinoceros would be in the upper reaches of my top ten roughest JDWs. Some of the bawdier old London outlets are quite genteel in comparison.

That's one of the less definite ones so it would be handy if he could confirm it. The current word is that the staff have been told it's being put up for sale. At least there are other ones around unlike Wick where the closest by public transport is a four hour train journey!

I didn't rate the Birds at all but the North Star was OK. The trouble is that it doesn't open until 16:00 on the days I'm there. If you go to E11 again then the George is directly opposite Wanstead tube and the bus stop by it will take you back to the Green Man roundabout where Browning Street is a very short walk away in the direction of the bus. The Manor House just up the High Street from the George does some crafty cask but it's £4.50 a pint apart from Mon-Wed.

The reason why I moved to where I am now is because there was a JDW round the corner, They were still a small London based chain of Free Houses then. They flogged it off with 4 others about 3 or 4 years later. It's owned by Heineken now and is a complete disaster, in fact I'm baffled how it hasn't been closed down.
