I was browsing pubs in West Bromwich for future pubs crawls.. I came across this very dodgy pub with 1990's prices

http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/39042/

For instant second after clicking on link, I was like "Forget it!"

Can you find more dodgy looking pubs than this one?

EDIT: Picture was took in 1990's.. there is another 30 to 40 pictures of pubs around black country was also took in 1980's and 90's by same person.

I'll guess I'll bring my digital camera to replace old photographs..

Unable to post links to pictures, but some of the ones on Glasgow outskirts always frightened me off

Some looked like Rab C's evil twin would be inside

Nice looking pub, that!

If you're doing West Brom, the Vine on Roebuck Street is probably worth a visit. Within walking distance of Kendrick Park tram stop.

Also, I would like to know what the Old Hop Pole is like, as thats on my next Midland Metro ale crawl for the future, ta

Already visited the Vine two years ago.. Nice pub with curry house in same building. I went there for pre drink before WBA Vs Plymouth game.

I already noted down Old Hop Pole down on my list of pubs.

What parts of Glasgow you are speaking of?

Never been to Glasgow. Been to Edinburgh, great pubs around city especially pubs with old buildings. Royal Mile has cracking pubs all way to Edinburgh Castle.

We can see the embedded data in the photograph, in the case of the Island Inn, it is implying that it was taken in February 2008 using a reasonable handheld digital camera. The clock could be wrong, although the camera would not have existed more than 4 years ago, and he may have taken a photo of the developed image - but it does look a little good. Or he could have forged the data, but that is a little extravagant.

I know given the prices outside it makes no sense, but there we are.

If it is old though, I am still glad we have it, but we do need to give users the ability to comment on when the images were taken.

Pub? Looks like the sort of place you'd buy a new exhaust from.

I suppose you are right..

Just that prices sounds too good for me and it is far cheaper than JD Wetherspoon.

This pub intrigue me with great interest and will visit it when I got the time. Oh yeah will photo it and bring back with report. ;)

I have to admit I am more wondering if it has closed, but the signage would have been vandalised I would think. Still it is a mystery to be solved.

Agree it looks more like a tire place though.

Edit: Still on Royal Mail, I don't believe those prices or the colour scheme myself though.

Just researched on net about Island Inn..

As recent as late 2008, it is still open with same name

BUT..

very disturbing thing about Island Inn is that it is ALLEGEDLY run by certain political party.. You know that guy off Question Time booed and heckled by audience recently (I refuse to name the party) is their leader.

In which case,if by some remote chance you end up in there, perhaps you could order several flaming sambuccas and forget to drink them before you left.

Sorry, as inhabitant of Sarf Coast the full geography of Glasgow area is unknown to me, only know it was not city centre, more outskirts on way to Beith, used to pass the old [but demolished] Hillman Imp works on the way

Just checked on maps, probably was Govan, Paisley or Johnstone

I think your review was inspired by the pubs name. I had to try and get a look sadly the best view I could get didn't look too exciting.

Bing map view? (http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=ss1hg5gtxwcj&scene=7429376&lvl=2&sty=b&eo=1)

Have you visited The Heathway, Castle Bromwich?

http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37663/

Make sure you put on riot gear before enter..

I actually have been there when my late grandparents lived nearby. The Heathway was very popular in 1960's and 1970's. One of best in area. My father watched England win World Cup in 1966 in this very pub

Then 1980's came pub started to falling down but still going strong.. just

1990 came and went..

Now we are in 2000's.. Hell's Angels, Chavs hanging about in front of pub asking "Yo brother.. spare a fag?" and druggies negotiating deal over drugs inside the pub.

Last time I saw was few windows boarded up, graffiti all over its wall and it is sad sight.

Soupy.. I challenge you buy pint in pub. Good luck mate...

I lived in Hodge Hill in Brum for years - went to Comet, Fox & Goose, Heathway, Raven, Hunter's Moon et al - my locals when i was 15, sorry, i mean 18. The first pub i ever went in was the Brookmeadow in Shard End.

I'll have a MILD please:D

There are some very dodgy pubs in Birkenhead especially around the docks , they are boarded up and look closed , then you notice the door open and people at the bar drinking . A couple of Hells Angels got chucked out of the Swinging Arm and there mates came around to sort it out and got battered .
Locally the Cross Keys at Hadley is very dodgy , me and my son play the "guess which windows broken today " game when we drive past .

Then time to revisit your youth days...

Oh that Hunters Moon.. I always eat there on Sundays in early 1980's with my family.

Know Fox and Goose but not sure on others. Shard's End is dodgy place to drink!

My Uncle drinks in his local The Racecourse, Bromford Drive not far from Hunter's Moon. Have you been there? Never visited it myself

"guess which windows broken today "

I went passed a pub a noted it was closed due to the several cracked and broken windows........ i passed it again later and found it was actually open. I had visions of a wild west bar, where people fly through the windows during bar fights - either that, or their darts team were really cr*p:eek:

Govan is Rab C Nesbitt country and not actually as bad as it once was, Paisley is a noted toilet, a couple of the bars (The Bull, Wee Howf) are quite good but be careful after dark, especially near the JDW. Haven't been in Johnstone since before I was 15 so I can't remember the pubs.

You win, this is well dodgy.

The Dick Whittington in Carpenters Park, Herts, which I visited just the once had a "reputation" (no picture or review I'm afraid) but like many others is an excretable estate style pub.

In spite of the steel shutters this one does sometimes open
Old Ropewalk, Liverpool (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/26769/). Many pubs in the 'Pool look OK outside and it's only once you're lured inside that the full horror strikes you.

I know exactly what Oggwyn means about Birkenhead, it should be twined with Kabul

Hey don't bring me into it !!!!

I might be in West Brom tomorrow so I might pop in !!

I think this is a dodgy looking pub in Brum - http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37692/ . Having said that I did go in once and it was packed. I was made to feel very welcome so appearances can be deceptive. Not long after someone was shot and killed and the pub has never reopened though !!

Cheers,

Del.

Indeed,

Hi Danny - read some of your reviews around my area - If you want more Thwaites near Cannock, the Shoal Hill Tavern does a wider range!:glass:
