I'm having trouble with the Bridge Inn, 2 Meadowhall Road, Sheffield S9 1BS. According to Royal Mail, this postcode applies only to nos. 21, 24 and 71-75 Meadowhall Road. (There are very few even numbers as Meadowhall Road runs alongside the river with not much room for buildings.) I've looked on Sheffield History (http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=7573) and Sheffield Pubs (http://www.sheffieldpub.co.uk/pubs/search/) websites but this pub is not listed on either. The former is a very thorough list, so I'm surprised not to find it there. Do we have any provenance for this listing?

The other thought that occurs to me is this: Meadowhall Road starts at the traffic lights at the junction with Brightside Lane and Wheedon Road. There is a railway bridge over Meadowhall Road at this point, and a patch of grass where conceivably there could have been a building. Both the railway and Wheedon Road go over the River Don at this point (Brightside Bridge), so there would be two reasons to have a pub called the Bridge Inn there.

I reckon it's long gone, though...:(

I've moved the map point, for what it's worth, and requested the pub be marked as closed.

Cheers

Hi sheffield hatter,

We just went ahead and deleted it. No provenance, any listing under an id of 50k (the number at the end of the address) has a slightly random nature to it and we have had a few amusing one go by. Predominantly they are good but not worth holding onto once there is a good suggestion they are not there.

Thanks again for the research.

Hi Conrad and Sheffield Hatter,

The Bridge Inn was a Wards tied house and it was still open in 2003,the pub was next to the bridge going over the river don and there was also a short stretch of railings in front of the pub,i went in this pub in 1983 but it was still listed in the 2003 Sheffield beer guide and also of note in a wards guide i have it stated there was a fig tree growing on the banks of the river next to the pub.

I hope this is of help to you Alan.

Thanks for that Alan. What a shame it's not there any mnore, it sounds OK. I don't suppose you have a photo, or you'd have mentioned it. In which case there's probably not much point re-instating it now that Conrad's deleted it.

This pub was resubmitted by Graham Mason together with b&w photo on 12/01/12. I have moved the map point to the place I put it on 6/03/11, which is supported by the similarity of the Google maps street view (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=S9+1BS&hl=en&ll=53.409561,-1.422182&spn=0.00086,0.003401&sll=53.401057,-1.440475&sspn=0.003819,0.006802&hnear=Sheffield+S9+1BS,+United+Kingdom&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=53.409561,-1.422182&panoid=UsHnL7DXOU3r3qaNRpeyyQ&cbp=11,331.6,,0,-8.8) (showing the empty space I mentioned before) and Graham's photo (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubpictures/76054/) - see the railway bridge in the background. I mention this now because when I moved the map point I failed to notice that Graham had already corrected the "best guess", so this will need approving.

Hi sheffield hatter,

What a lot of excitement for a closed pub. I have approved that now.

Thanks for letting us know.
